Let's say, perhaps,

you breed two GSD's together, but the dam has West, East & Belgium and American in it's bloodlines, and the sire

                        has

Czech, Slovak, Alsatian in it's bloodlines, now is it still a German Shepherd Dog?

Of course it is.  Bloodlines don't make the breed.  Breed type does.  And no, I am not going to enter into the ridiculous philosophical argument.  They're different bloodlines of the same breed.

OMG.......

I have just found out that the wild American GSD had an affair with a pure white GSD, it was a neighbors handsome white German Shepherd Dog, that was registered, but could not help himself, some where back about 3 generations, what now?

Any time you breed two gds you puppies produced would be GSD.

In name only.   I think it's a similar phenomenon as seen in other breeds like the English and American Cockers, English and American Foxhounds etc..  These breeds were changed over time, to better suit those aficionados on this side of the Atlantic.   Eventually the breeders went in so different a direction the breed books were closed and the names changed.  I think it's time to do the same with American Line GSDs, change the name to American Shepherds, close the stud books.  By and large, the American Line dogs are no longer bred for any kind of work,  for the most part, they have been bred for the show ring and solely as companion animals.

I have to agree with you Sue... as I have just discovered the joy of the working GSD...(I own a show line dog as well), and there is no comparison.

This makes no sense.

Any male and female gsd that produce puppies will produce gsd.

Even if one is a crappy american blood line and the other is german blood line.

Although many would be happy if the american lines would go by another name it just is not so.
