I COULD USE DOME ADVICE,, MY FEMALE JUST WHELPED  10 PUPS AND I AM WORRIED ABOUT HAVING ENOUGH MILK TO GO AROUND IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO HELP HER BUILD HER MILK SUPPLY UP??

by Penny on 27 February 2010 - 18:02

Hi
Rely on nature and very good feeding.   I have NEVER had such good milk supply from any of my females since I fed good quality raw food in plentiful supply.  I feed fresh raw chicken wings, chicken mince, - preferably with the bones ground in so that the calcium supply is there, chicken necks, beef heart, kidney, and liver, in smaller amounts and cut up small and mixed in with the other food. Hard boiled egg once per day.
For biscuit I give good quality wholemeal biscuit to chew, i.e. bonio form, not meal form.  I also feed chopped up carrot or grated carrot if the dog is fussy in with the meat, but only say 2 carrots per day and some pasta.   I dont have to boil my pasta, I just soak it overnight to soften and they even seem to prefer it.

So: Daily diet for my lactating females is as follows

AM - `lb chicken mince 1/2 raw carrot - 6 chicken wings.
midday - 8 chicken wings - i raw carrot if she will eat it whole otherwise share it between meals
pm - small amount of heart/kidney/liver ( 1/2 cup of each) mixed with 1lb chicken mince & 1/2 raw carrot diced or shreaded

Bonio biscuit before they go down for the night with a hard boiled egg.

Also it is vital to leave her with them for the first 3 - 4 weeks.  Dont allow her freedom to run her normal daily life and pop in and feed them when she wants as she will develop divided loyalties and give them just enough.  If she sits with them and comes out regularly and has no other stimulation than motherhood, she will feed to excess and milk is made on supply and demand.  More the puppies suckle more is made.

Sounds like a lot of faffing around, but if you prepare in advance its easy as anything, and your female will actuaolly gain weight whilst feeding and look wonderful when her puppies are to be sold and buyers come to meet her.   Good luck.

Feeding the female correctly and enough is most important. However, don't be surprised if you do need more milk. Get some Esbilac or goatsmilk and have it around just in case you need it. Weigh the pups daily and keep a good record so if one is not gaining proportionately you can help.

Hello SK9 I, many years ago, breeders supplemented lactating bitches with "calf starter", available at any farm supply store. When I was breeding, I always used this with good results.

Best,

As a midwife guys - Milk doesnt make Milk  - its a myth - although I do agree goats milk and lamb rearing milk is excellent product, but it can give dogs very loose motions, so if your lactating bitch gets greedy on it, she gets loose, and the good fluid to make the milk is lost in faeces.   Mo

HI,

I agree with Penny (I would do though generally as she is my mum!).

I feed raw diet too and including raw heart and liver is brilliant for lactating bitches. The more the bitch feeds the pups, the more milk she will produce. I have raised a litter of 12 pups with absolutely no supplement. Mother of pups just spends her time feeding pups a few at a time - she will work out a routine! The only other things she does is eat and relieve herself!

Oh - and I feed my bitches as much as they want - 5 or 6 meals a day if they will - they don't even get thin!

cow's milk gives loose stools.......goat milk does not.

I give bitches a mothers cocktail:  Chicken broth;  add a little honey and a raw egg yolk, you can also give some goat's milk but I found adding the goat's milk always gave runs;  So chicken broth with honey and a raw egg yolk, room temperature, several times per day;  l-2 cups at a time helps to produce quality milk.  You can dilute the chicken broth with water if you have to use the canned, use low sodium;  prefer to use homemade if you can make it  yourself.
