My friend, who has had GSDs for 30+ years, & who bred my girl Kali, was called on by her county's rescue to take in a momma & her pups. Apparently some kind person had reported a pair of stray dogs, 1 black & 1 black & tan GSD roaming around the Ashland, Pa area. They put out food for them, trying to lure them to capture, when they lost track of the GSD for a couple of days. When they spotted her again, they observed that she had been nursing pups, & had full teats. So, they called animal control, & she was tracked to a local junk yard, where she had made a den for her babies under an old school bus. In all this cold & terrible weather she had a litter of 7 pups. She had also sustained an injury to 1 of her legs, possibly hit by a car, but all the pups seemed healthy. The local shelter already had 2 bitches with litters, & could not take another, so my friend stepped up, cleaned out her whelping area, & took her in. The momma is rail thin, & now having some trouble with diarrhea starting back on a regular diet, but the county is helping with vet care & meds, & she is getting tested for Giardia, parasites, etc. The pups are surely mixed, but look like little shepherds, with masks & dark grey or brownish sable coats. My friend is working on establishing some trust with the momma, so she can get them all cleaned up. She's calling her Mooshka for now...no chip or tags.....momma looks to be only about 9 months old, pups about 3 weeks...she needs your prayers! And eventually they will need homes, my friend is only able to foster them for now....! jackie harrisIsn't she pretty? Who could dump such a sweet girl? Heartbreaking!!!

I sure hope some of these stories result in fewer litters being bred just for a buck. If there's a point to the breeding, OK, but if it's just to send another undervalued dog out into the hard cold world, I just don't think so. This poor bitch was treated like garbage.

The folks that reported her to animal control said she had been roaming sround Ashland, Pa for around a month before they realized she had given birth, possibly she was abandoned & then got bred while she was free roaming? Or they found out she was pregnant & dumped her? Who knows...I'm glad she's safe & cared for now! jackie harris

I'm glad your friend took her in. I hope all the puppies get wonderful homes and the mother gets a home where she will be cherished and not abandoned, unspayed to fend for herself... Poor baby

I guess I'm just an old softy, but I just don't understand how people can abandon an animal that looks at you with the adoration & intelligence that our GSDs possess. ***sigh*** But I guess if people can dump their own kids off in gas station bathrooms, a poor dog doesn't stand a chance. Sad, sad world. My friend, in my humble opinion, is a hero for taking her in. She says she has been very tolerant of her & her family, seems to be grateful to be in out of the cold. Mooshka was a little 'grumbly' about my friend handling her pups, understandably, but was otherwise very sweet tempered & patient . I haven't gotten an update on Mooshka yet today, & unfortunately I'm most likely gonna be stuck at work for the next couple of days, but I will update this thread as soon as I can, probably on the weekend.  jackie harris

Some people throw their own daughters out of the house to fend for themselves when they get pregnant.
I think EJ should call her Lucky... because she IS... now.
God bless her for taking the job on.

My friend says everyone is doing well, & while the county shelter is helping with medical bills for Mooshka & the pups, she is looking for anyone who could donate a few substantial toys; some small ones for the pups as they get more active, to offer stimulation for them, & for poor momma Mooshka, who is really just a puppy herself! Anything safe for a vigorous chewer would be OK for momma, & the usual puppy toys for the babies, tugs, ropes, etc. I'll being visiting my local pet store & see if I can find a bunch of goodies for them. Anyone else who'd like to contribute, PM me & I'll give you contact info. EJ is retired, her husband has been retired for years; you know what it's like to try to survive on a fixed income. Little things like puppy toys are not on the budget, but EJ's doing her best for these poor babies, & their mom. And I can help, so I will. Maybe Mooshka would enjoy a jolly ball!  And I always got a kick out of watching my pups with those big, fat knotted ropes with the shaggy ends....it seemed like 1 pup would pick it up, then another would grab it, then another, pretty soon they would all have hold of it, & try to run in all different directions...turn into a tug-o-war....they were so funny, I could watch them endlessly....yep, gotta get one of those, as well! I hope I get a chance to watch them play! Ummm, puppy breath!  jackie harris

Oops! Forgot the text! Puppy pictures! They're doing very well! And cute little buggers they are, too! Here's hoping for loving forever homes for them all! Wonder what they'll look like when they grow up? Any guesses? jackie harris
