I have a GSD rescue who has developed colitis. It's been a really lousy couple of weeks with my poor girl suffering from bloody diarrhea and constantly needing to go outside, not always making it of course. We've had to get up to let her out 3-4 times a night, and it's made us completely sleep deprived. The Vet has prescribed Tylan capsules and we have started her on them along with Flagyl. I didn't realize until I looked at the bill that this medication is costing $100 a week. If we have to keep her on it long term I really need to find an alternative source as the vet charges top dollar for it. I have tried Pet-Meds and a few other sites, but since I am in Canada I have been unable to find any online source for it. Does anyone know of a website or company I can contact to get this in Canada? Also, is this a very effective drug? I'm hoping this, along with a change of diet will do the trick, but I'd like to hear from others who this drug has shelped.
Thanks for any information anyone can provide.

You can find it at farm stores or online at revival animal health. It's labeled for use with poultry, but is the same stuff your vet prescribed.

Hunter: I'm sorry to hear it didn't work for you. I've had 3 GSD's and all of them had diarrhea at various times throughout thier lives. My first dog, Dallas, got it almost every month. With her, plain white rice after a day of fasting usually fixed it up. In my current situation, my present GSD was usually very solid, but this has been going on for 6 weeks now and just wont let up. I can handle the runs, it's the blood that worries me.
Good luck.

Sulfasalazine is recommended most commonly for lymphocytic/plasmacytic colitis and prednisone for eosinophilic and granulomatous colitis. You can use metronidazole (Flagyl Rx) as a substitute for sulfasalazine and tylosin also works sometimes.

Thanks again, and I'll post to let everyone know how it's going.
Hunter: Can you please let me know what ends up helping you? I'm very interested in what your solution turns out to be.
