I have a 15 week old GSD puppy.  She is current on all vet checks and all is well. Her next visit will be being spaded if I choose.  Is that wise at 6 months old to do that.  Just thought that was young for growing puppy.

Thanks

I don't do it until 17-18 months, if I'm spaying at all, but DO IT SOON if you think there's a shred of a chance a male will get at her.

i live in the uk.have just had to have my old girl(aged 9,nearly 10,in june)speyed due to pyometra.the vets in this country now advise to spey before their 1st season .the vets reason being to prevent a female from getting pyometra.i personally would let  them have a season 1st and then spey following the seaonand before the next if i wasnt intending to have a litter.what do others think on this subject?

I have found that GSDs mature with each season and for that reason I have found that letting them have 2 seasons prior to being spayed the best.

Also this way you get an idea of how long they go between seasons and can spay in the middle rather than too close to a season.

agree totally with you there liebe.i think before the 1st season is too soon.most people manage with male animals on the premises.a friend of mine puts her bitch in a boarding kennel for the period where there is the most risk of a mismating.my advice is,if the owner has a male on the property is to buy a crate to put her in when at home and make sure that the male cant get to her when they are out.

I agree with Liebe, please let her have 2 seasons, the reason being her vulva has fully grown along with her body. Spaying prior could lead to Vaginitis in later life. My Vet (old fashioned ) is totally against carrying out this procedure for the above reason. Unlike most of today IE pureley monetary gain. Obviously should there be a medical need then he would!!

I had a young female when  on her 1st season she took a pyometra and had to be speyed she was 13 months old
I would let her have her 2 season then get her speyed safe time 6 to 10 weeks after season or 6 to 10 weeks before season that is what my old vet recomends   good luck with her

I would let her have at least one (preferably two) seasons as Liebe suggested.

I believe it best to wait until fully grown as otherwise spaying can affect their growth and give them problems later on, because the bones aren't the right length and angle.  Also apparently it can affect them in different ways for other cancers - so they may have marginally less chance of mammary tumours, but more chance of others.  Obviously if its a medical necessity then fair enough but otherwise I would wait until fully grown and mature.
