Many years ago went to a clinic featuring Bob Vest and Roy. Found both to be incredibly talented and very nice. Roy I believe works borders and aussies but has worked with GSDs.

Check out the AHBA site re trainers. Also when searching the web for trainers and facilities make sure you also search stock dogs not just herding.

A good way to start is to go to some clinics and seminars. Start as a spectator before you bring a dog with you. I beleive there is an article on the AKC website under herding that talks about getting the most out of a clinic. Down the road once you get your feet wet another good way to learn is to be a judge's secretary during a trial as most of them talk the entire time they judge, pointing things out to you. Great way to learn.

I will look that up, I have two young dogs that I want to get an instinct test on them, but I would certainly love to go to a clinic!  I want to take things slowly because I have plently of time... I have contacted a lady in SW VA, she said she could test them in March sometime, but it is very far to travle for me.
