Hi all,
I have a question that I can't seem to find an unequivocal answer to.
It was suggested by a friend that my beaut pup should have calcium supplement, however he is perfectly healthy.
If a healthy GSD pup is being fed on a good diet (high quality kibble, no brand no scandal so to speak) is there any situation which would warrant calcium supplement, most stuff I find suggests that it is dangerous and can adversly affect bone formation in a young dog but I dunno......?
Any answers or opinion much appreciated.

Hi,just to give you the short of it,DO NOT ADD ANY CALCIUM IF YOU ARE ONLY GIVING HIM HIS KIBBLE.If you were giving a diet where there was alot of extra meat then I would say yes balance out the phosphorous but if your pup is getting kibble absolutely DO NOT screw around with this.Yes it can cause alot of problems.Hope this helps.

You definitely do not want to add any calcium; however, to give him a little extra while growing; some breeders use soft rib bones (rib back bones) RAW ONLY. Just a thought. Are his ears up?

As Domenic and Nan have stated, you should NOT give a pup extra calcium as a supplement. There is a very fine balance between CA and phosphorus in the canine body and, especially in pups, this balance can easily be upset and lead to serious health problems. Make sure your pup has a quality diet and leave it go at that.
