We just brought our new puppy home 3 days ago, We got her from a reputable import line breeder.  She was the runt of the litter and is very mellow and sweet.  But I am very concerned she isn't eating enough.  She seems very skinny to me.  She shows no interest in her food -  1/2 dry with 1/2 freshly cooked chicken and rice mix.  This is what she was eating at the breeders but will not eat it for me.  I added some steamed carrots to it but she just tried to pick all of the carrots out and left the rest.  I also tried steamed zucchini, she loved that as well but tried to pick around the rest, I mixed it together better so she couldn't pick around the other food and then she wasn't interested in it at all.  Why does my dog want to be a vegetarian?????
She had loose stools the 1st day and a half after we brought her home, she is now having soft formed stools and wants to eat
them like she is starving or something but won't touch her food.  Help!!! We are not experienced dog/puppy owners.  What should I give her to eat and how do you train them to leave their poop alone!!!!

Your dog will not survive as a vegetarian.

Have you tried some natural yogurt? Has the puppy been wormed? When did she have her last set of shots?
Have you tried to offer her the chicken raw?

by OliveVonW on 06 February 2010 - 23:02

She was wormed at 3, 5, and 7 weeks.  She is up to date on all shots.  Is it OK to give her the chicken raw?  Do I just put the whole mixture in the yogurt?  Would you continue to give veggies at this time?

Has your pup seen a veterinarian yet?  I would make an appt. ASAP.  Not eating, skinny, and "mellow" would worry me.   Bring in a stool sample, have them check for giardia, etc.  She may have something that the wormer that was used doesn't get rid of.   Have you taken her temp?

She plays with the kids and runs around outside, she seems to have the same temperament as the day we picked her up so I was not super concerned that she was sick.  I will try  to take her temp.  If she had an intestinal problem would her stools be loose?  We made an appointment to see the vet in a week and a half for her next shot but she has not seen a vet yet.  I tried to call today but they are not open on Saturday.  I will see if I can find one that takes call on weekends. I am grateful for your time and advice!

Hi

When ever I get a pup I bring it to a vet right away even if it appears to be ok. (just to be safe)
Some breeders give a time limit to have it checked by a vet.

You say she seems skinny to you.

It is better to have a lean pup than a fat pup. (developing joints)
Being able to feel her spine and see the last few ribs is what many say is ideal.
Can you post a picture?

I would stop the dry food for a few days.
If your dry food is not the same as what she was getting before, that could affect the stools.

You can also try:  lightly boil ground beef - just to remove a little fatty oil, not to cook it all the way.
Mix around 2/3s beef & 1/3 rice. (see if she eat some raw)

Also have her checked for tapeworm if you're in (or she came from) a warm climate where she may have been exposed to fleas.  You can sometimes see the tapeworm segments in their waste.  Watch for a few minutes after she eliminates, you'd see what appears to be moving grains of rice.  They make their way out of the stool to burrow in the ground.  Don't panic if she has one, they're easy to get rid of and you CANNOT catch them unless you eat fleas.  Have you called the breeder and asked what her appetite was like before she left?  I always take a new puppy to my vet to have them checked out and it's especially important if you have concerns.  Hope all is okay and it's just a new home adjustment.  Good luck and let us know.

Coccidia is fairly common in puppies and will cause them to have decreased appetite I would get her in ASAP for a Vet check including a snap test for giardia and routine deworming with Drontal at least ,find out what she was wormed with if it was nemex that stuff is not always effective
