Hello All!  I am new to this messageboard.  With all the experience that is here, I was hoping that I could get a "top 5" suggested reading list for a gsd.  I am preparing for my first gsd puppy (next summer) and thought that this forum would be a great opportunity to gather further information in my seemingly never-ending education on gsd.  Please feel free to recommend favorites.  Books/Articles on puppies, show lines, working lines, training, etc.,  are all requested.

Thanks,

John

The Art of Raising a Puppy
The Monks of New Skete

This is one of those books that most wish they had read BEFORE they brought thier puppy home.  Not just for GSD owners, but for people serious about giving their puppy the right start in life.  Enjoy!

Hi,

Look around your area for a schutzhund club and puppy classes.
Socialization is important for a pup.

The German Shepherd Dog in Word & Picture
v. Stephanitz

The Total German Shepherd Dog
Fred Lanting

If you are interested in the evolution and genetics of the breed, look for The German Shepherd Dog: A Genetic History, by Malcom B. Willis.  It should be required reading for anyone considering breeding but is full of information that could be useful in selecting a new pup as well.

The Art of Raising a Puppy
The Monks of New Skete

these two are very good books, but another one that I can recommend is: Schutzhund obedience training in drive (not that you have to do schutzhund but there is a lot of good info in there on training in general. As well I would pick up as many training books videos as you could afford, this will make surre that you do not fuck up your new dog when you get it, too many owners crate the issues that they latter are not happy with. So start right, read thse three books, and get some training videos they will help you understand more what you into.

Thanks for the advice!  So far, I have been able to find the Art of Raising a Puppy, the Monks of New Skete both in book and DVD.  I have started reading the book.  Still looking for the other ideas.

Keep any new thoughts coming.

Expert Obedience Training For Dogs Winifred Stickland If you are in the mood to start picking apart the skills required for obedience training and to put together the big picture you have planned for your dog this is a good book. I found this very well written, clear & concise. You can find old copies of it on e-bay.
