Well, my heart is almost back out of my throat... While getting Mom ready to head home we realized that my pup Ikon had jumped over the gate and vanished... Bev and I searched the roads for 1/2 a mile in all directions without finding him. As I was about to turn around in the drive and do another round my Mom called from the house that He was a the Veterinarian's. Dreading the worse, I did a record breaking 3point turn in the road and traveled the 4 miles to the vets in about 3 minutes. Thoughts of if he was alive, if so how badly hurt he might be, and how the hell I would afford treatment... thoughts of having to call the breeder and tell her. All the dreams of  growing with him... COMPLETE PANIC...

I Ran on ahead of Bev into the hospital, and there sits the lil shit by the counter wagging his tail about his great adventure he'd had, and the nice people who gave him a ride to the Vets to see all the awesome friends he'd made last week and very glad that I'd FINALLY shown up to get him. I sat down on the floor and hugged the crap out of him and started bawling. The short of the story is that he's 100% fine, was at a neighbors 1/4 a mile from the house trying to get into their pickup in the yard. As they were heading out to take their daughter back to college they decided the best thing to do was take him over to the Vets to see if they recognized him rather than risk him getting in the road and being hit!

This was 5 hours ago, and my pulse is almost normal again... I've geri-rigged the gate so it's higher, and Ike doesn't go out without an armed guard til I make permanent improvements to it. I also realize how terribly deeply this dog is into my soul already... Thanks Lee... he's a treasure... a PAIN IN THE BUTT at time, but a treasure none the less.

I know what you mean. It's like a child coming home late and you are so worried then you are angry that they put you through the worry.  But they are dogs so you can't ground them you are just glad you have them back!!!
I'm glad you have him back safe 'n sound!

Soooo glad he came home unscathed!  My heart aches at the mere thought of what you went thru.  I can so relate and we haven't even had that experience.  I have nightmares about this sort of thing.  Give him a hug for me.

UGHHHH I feel your pain! It is so scary! But I am glad you got him back safely.
Not to hijack your thread, but I moved to Las Vegas a year and a half ago and my boy Galan who was a little over a year at the time was boarding at a friend's house back in TX. He had been there about a few weeks.
I got a call from my friend that someone had come to the property while he wasn't home and stole one of his puppies. A neighbor who had been watching the house call ed the police but as the truck was pulling away, MY dog scaled the fence and went after the truck. The neighbor said he'd never seen a dog run so fast.
10 days. That was how long my boy was gone. We had Animal Control looking. I called them from here in Vegas every single day. One day they even told me they had reports that a wolf was in the neighborhood and people were threatening to shoot it. I was beyond distraught (my dog is sable)... Finally they called me and said they thought the caught him! I asked him dozens of questions and they said "This is your dog, and man, he's a NICE dog!"
The next day I sent my friend the money to ship him to me. I wasn't taking any more chances on him escaping again. He came home to me about 10 pounds underweight and wormy, but really no worse for the wear considering he must have lived on garbage for a week and a half...OH and Animal Control picked him up right in front of my friend's house. My friend had suspected he had been by "to visit" as there was a big dog turd in his front yard the day before, but I was a crying fool for that 10 days, and about 2 more days when he got home.....SO glad you got your boy back too! Give him a big hug for me!

Glad to hear that Ikon's well.  I've returned/retrieved a couple of  "escapees" this year and while I've never had the elation of having a dog returned (and I hope never to be in that situation) I could see the relief and happiness in the owner's face.

Charlie,
It is an amazing feeling of elation. Being hundreds of miles away I felt completely helpless. The only thing I could do was call the A/C officer, sometimes more than once a day. I didn't want them to think I had given up hope of finding him, and we all know how crowded shelters are so I didn't want him to slip through the cracks and either get adopted out or euthanized!
