I have heard people talking about their dogs having a split heat,
what is a split heat & is it a real heat that produces pups, or is it just a screwed up cycle?
Thanks,
Paula

I think its where they have part of their heat cycle then they stop then it starts again. Thats as simple as I can put it.

Paula, I can't answer your question about a bitch's fertility during a split heat, but I DO want to give this warning.
My friend's Shiloh bitch seemed to come into heat again six weeks after her heat had finished. It turned out it WASN'T a split heat, but the beginnings of pyometra. The vet said it is quite typical for pyo to occur 4 to 6 weeks after a heat.
So, if your bitch has a split heat, be VERY VERY careful about making assumptions. Get a vet to check her out, as pyometra can be fatal if not treated promptly!

Thanks Sunsilver,
I was asking cause my girl that I already bred was acting extra flirty, and it's been 11 days since she's been bred & alittle over 3 weeks from the first sign of blood.....she has no more discharge, but would like to still accept a stud, is she just a big tease????

This is not an answer you want
:o)
Double pain in the a#%!!!
The heet splits sometimes it goes for a week or two, stops and 8 weeks later it continues..
Every female is different sometimes the break is longer, shorter, the 1st part is longer.
I had a female that did this to me each end every time. I could not breed her for that I always missed it (back in a day we did not do ovulation check)
Pack

MIrasmom, the only way to be sure is to get the vet to check her hormone levels. She SHOULD be past her fertile time at this stage, but weird things happen.
OTOH, if you want to save the money you'd spend on the tests...If you've got the male there, and he's willing and she's willing (not just being a tease) well, why not let them go at it?
Most heats do last at least 21 days, so I don' t think this would really qualifty as a 'spit heat'.

I brought her back to the male I had bred her with 4 days later, and she wanted to kill him,
then I hid her from the male I have at home for 5 days, then I put them together, and he showed an interest, and she almost bit his head off, so I thought, OH good, that's over with, then the next day I let her out around him, and she was flagging and standing for him, so she is sooooo put away from him,
I'm confused
The first drop of blood was Oct. 9th, this "flirting happened November 1st"
Could it just be she's a big tease......that's like 23 days later........

One of my bitches was bred on day 28 so I would probably run a progesterone test, you may have missed her last time even though she did stand for the stud.

One of our bitches came into season was tested for ovulation and mated on day 12 and 14 then went off, exactly 9 days after the first mating she ovulated again(she was tested) she was mated again and took to the second set of matings producing 9 healthy puppies, our vet was adamant she would take to the second i wasn't so sure but he was right, that was a split season, never had it before and hope we dont again as i was a nervous wreck not really knowing when they were due

I have a female that cycles once a year, actually every 8 months, she has split cycles every time! she begins some swelling and good discharge, the male wants her, she doesn't want him, at days 12-14 when she should breed, she won't--swelling didn't continue and discharge pretty much stopped, a week later, almost suddenly, she swells, discharge starts again for 4-5 days and then will accept the male, she has taken each time on that second part and had 8 or more pups. the first time this happened, she did get a uterine infection and had to be treated and she did NOT get pg, after that she has done fine. having your own male around is a big Plus in this situation...and keeping lots of notes.. :)
