My gsd also has black spots.  Not all that uncommon, I don't believe.  Some say it is a sign of good pigmentation, nice colors.  Some say it is something only purebreds have, but I have heard owners of mixed dogs say theirs have the black spots.

i had heard that purebreds have black in their mouths but not on the tongue.. interesting... it really doesnt matter just curious...
i am looking for a black and tan / black and red male with dark coloring.... what should i be looking for in colors as a puppy ????
i am inexperienced in this and look at them and think they are all cute.... :-)
I am not looking to breed or show, just want another family pet...

My showline and my workingline both have the black spots. Has nothing to do with breed, as I see many, many mixed breeds with spotted tongues :)

Just a little advice, If you want one for just a family pet then go for a Showline Pup a little less aggravation i would think than one with strong working lines, i think you will find it just a little more ameanable and steady as a youngster and old dogpossibly some may not agree but for what its worth a thing to think about

Hi,
The black spots on the tongue mean nothing. MY Maggie has a huge black spot.

Now when looking for coloration. The pup should be a deep red. If you have a pup that is a lighter tan or have a gray-ish tint to their tan then they will be a light tan to a cream.

These pups have rich red coloring

The 2 pups in that video are Mick (the blk/tn) and Jackson (black/ and sliver[light than])

A still picture of Mick:

Two stills of Jackson:

A younger pic of Jackson:

And here is also a pic of Randy and Mandy from the same litter as Jackson and Mick

In that pic you can see the difference between Randy and his red coloring and Mandy and her cream/light tan.

Basically what Im saying is if you want a pup with deep coloring pick a pup that already has it.

according to the wide spread public opinion, and at least one Vet I heard of from a girl in my last training group, the dog definitely has Chow in the line.....ROFL

but seriously, those spots mean nothing, they are just pigment spots.....there were some chechz line dogs with completely black tongue time ago

thanks everyone...
Steve i already have a show line female and i would really want a working line male. i want one with a straight back. my female has a sloped back and i am not a huge fan of it.... but i love her and wouldnt trade her for anything....
i would love to have a dog to do obedience and fetch that kind of stuff... so a decent drive but doesnt have to be crazy...
