I didn't want to take over someone else's thread, so I posting a new one :)
My breeder has reserved a pup (W/L)  for me from a litter he is expecting the middle of Sept. Both parents are Bi Colors.
Can I expect the pup will also be bi colored? Let me know if you need the grandparents colors :)
Thanks in advance

Of all the color alleles, or more correctly, patterns, the only one less dominate than bi-color (at) is black (a).  So to have a bi-color pattern, the gene combination would either be (at+at) which would be a pure bi-color, or (at+a) which would be a bi-color with a recessive black gene.  If both the sire and dam are bi-color with recessive black genes, then you can get about a quarter of the pups as black....any other bi-color x bi-color combination will result in all bi-colors.

I struggle with this issue personally, because the purest most experienced handler/trainers/breeders will tell you...."you never buy a pup based on color, you buy a pup based on temperament and working ability."  Which is correct, and I agree......but, wouldn't it be nice to get that awesome pup, and the color you favor???

Personally I favor Black Sable and Bi-colors close behind that......but if someone gave me an awesome working line pup, I wouldn't care if it was hot pink if it was of solid nerve, and and strong in all three phases!

Good luck with your pup!

Stacy, just make sure that the dogs are really bi-colors.  A lot of folks call a dark black & tan a "bi-color".  I guess it's sexier to have a "bi-color" dog than the more common B&T.  LOL

I think a lot of people also mistake a black & tan blanketed dog for a bi-color.

Thanks for all the info, now whether I retain it or not...well .... LOL

Yes, Bi Color DOES sound sexier ;)

The breeding is one I am really looking forward to. To be honest, at first I wasn't sure I liked the bi coloring But LOVE mom and dad's pedigrees and temperaments...The more I look at the dad the more I like his looks. I chose this particular breeding since I love the working ability of both parents. I am not picking my puppy. I told the breeder what I was looking for and he is going to pick the female pup he feels will be the best match.
So that is why I wondered if they will all be bi colors, since if they are NOT, Well...then the best match for me may be one of the other colors. Still okay, but I (secretly) favor a pretty colored dog LOL
The breeder did chose my male as a pup and I am very pleased with the way he is turning out. (He is 2 and I am just now starting his SchH training, so "I" am making a lot of mistakes, my dog is very forgiving and patient)

As far as if they are "true" bi colors, well that just threw me all off being a newbie lol. Here are links to the sire and dam, maybe someone can tell me if they are/are not...Thanks again for all the info, interesting reading!
