Hi.  We have a 3 mo. old GSD or Dutch Shep mix pup who needs to learn to swim to be safe around our pool.  At what age can we introduce him to water and teach him to swim?

It is odd that this should crop up today as only this morning it is the topic in the Leerburg newsletter that I recieve weekly via email.

7 weeks. Show them where to get out of the swimming pool. I'll go with them in the pool and carry them in the arms and support them if they panic. Usually after 30 seconds pups have no problem. Or I take them to a lake and start walking into the water on a boat ramp calling them and playing stick in the shallow water with water loving dogs. Dogs love water.
I believe it is imperative to teach your dogs how to get out of pool.  I release tham in the center of the pool several times and make sure that the dog swims to the edge with steps. My friends golden retriever dog drowned hanging of the edge until he got tired and then he slipped under.
Very sad. Since then all my dogs are taught to be comfortable around a pool and to get out.

Pools are dangerous especially for a pup, most do not have steps.
The pup should be old enough or large enough to navigate whatever means there are to get out safely and the ramp or steps should be very visible from water level.

I let my dogs learn about water at their own pace and never force it on them.

All animals can swim, some do not like it.
Make sure those first few experiences are pleasant and productive.
And even with steps or a ramp, same as children, supervise or risk a loss.

No force.

Moons.
