My 8 1/2 months GSD just started her first heat about a week ago. Is it normal for her appetite to drop?

It can cause the appetite to drop a bit. I do not know where you live but the freaking heat here has everyone refusing to eat despite they are in an air conditioned house.

Yes that can happen often due to hormonal changes.
