I recently got a new puppy and he will be 8 weeks old this Sunday.
I took him to the veterinarian the day I got him to make sure everything was okay. Everything was fine but when she was checking his male parts she only found one testicle. So, she turned him over and examined him more thorougly. She said he had the other testicle, but it hadn't descended into the scrotum.
I got him to train and compete him and eventually one day breed him. So, my question is will his other testicle descend into the scrotum? Or should I be concerned.
Thanks.

Thank you for you reply shostring.
The vet's exact words were "his testicle hasn't descended into the scrotum yet". So, I took that to mean that because he was still young it still had time to descend.

I have had male hunting dogs that did not have both of them to descend untill 6 or 7 months old. I even had one that one of the testicles kept going up and down untill he was 7 months old.

Yes Max.... I think your breeder should have mentioned it.
Perhaps the vet didn't mention it to the breeder?.....even so....I can't imagine that the breeder didn't check for testicles, as the puppies were being of age to be sold.?! Perhaps the breeder just assumed that they would descend soon anyway??
The best think would be to contact the breeder directly, and ask for yourself.......otherwise, all you can gain from the rest of us is speculation.
Best wishes on your pup!

How old was the puppy when you got him? I didn't think they could leave UNTIL 8 weeks.

How can one plan to breed a puppy before it's even an adult? I hope you at least plan to title your dog and know a lot about genetics and breeding before you do that. I just find it unscrupulous practice to plan on breeding when it's still a puppy and you don't even know what you've got.

your pups testicle can still come down, i have had some take 9 or 10 weeks. if it takes like 6 months i would not use the pup for breeding . i do think the breeder should of told you this, as you were buying for show/breeding. i always check my pups even if they go for pets.

I examined Dublin this morning while he was sleeping. I put him on his back and used gentle downward pressure and was able to see one testicle move. I then went over to the other side and saw the other testicle move. I did this more than once to make sure I wasn't feeling the same testicle. I even put my finger on one testicle and used my other finger to located the other testicle. I also stood him up (where he was on all fours) and examined him. I felt two little testicles. I assume because I can actually feel them and see them move, that means that both have descended into the scrotum now?
Cheers.

Okay, thought I would come here and post this. I just got off the phone with the breeder and she said that when the veterinray examined him that both his testicles were descended. So, my line of thinking is maybe the veterinary I took him to made a mistake? After all she is human and Dublin was making quite the fuss on the table. He was squirming around, pitching a fit and wouldn't be still, that doesn't seem the most opportune time to check him. When I examined him earlier he was asleep and relaxed and I felt two testicles.
Oh and to answer the questions I didn't answer before:
GSDTravels: Dublin was 7 weeks when I got him. I know of several breeders who let their puppies go at 7 weeks.
Doberdoodle: Surely I am not the first person in the history of mankind to buy a puppy with thoughts of breeding him in the future? I see nothing wrong with that. If you read my first post I stated clearly that I bought him to train and compete. So, of course I am going to title him and see what he's like before I breed. But, if I do breed him it will be well after he is two years old.
