Hello,
So I normally like show lines, and understand pedigrees from them, and know many breeders, but never really considered actually studying about working lines.
What I understand is that working dogs are one line correct? And show lines another. Then for example for show lines there are two categories, which I guess can be called sublines?, and those are American and German. Now the working lines have a few more "sublines" such as Czech, DDR, West German, and I have also seen Slovakian, Belgian, and Dutch lines.
Now the thing is is that for show lines, NEVER would a West German be bred with an American lines one, they are still a show line but two totally different things. But working dogs I have seen that they are mixed between the sublines, or I have seen that they are either just pure.
My question is, is this desirable (to mix sublines)? Is it best to be kept pure?
Please help clear my confusion. I really want to learn about the working line, as much as I know about the show lines. I have been waiting forever for a dog, and I really want to study and do my homework.
And please don't be harsh, I am only a teen and still learning something everyday about this fabulous breed.
Thanks!

I would say you have much to learn.
Breeding is more than just what bloodlines to look at.
The difference between work and show is evident.
Ask more specific questions.

And yes I understand the difference of show and work it is obvious, but I was looking at working lines about a week ago. So I am new to these types of dogs. I have only been looking for about a week on breeders websites first and had that as my major question. The only thing I know about working lines is the difference between the show ones. That's it. That's why I am trying to learn from somewhere. Everyone starts somewhere with baby steps.
I know there is more to breeding than just bloodlines. You have to match correct temperament, look at faults in the lines, hips etc. which takes an extensive amount of time.

No matter what lines, you must know the animals you select.
Yes it does take an extensive amount of time.
If your used to show lines and you want to start dealing with working lines be ready for a drastic change.
Look for resource websites not breeders websites.

Do you have any recommendations of websites or books?

Pet or guard dog?
What is it you would be looking for in a working line GSD ?

Don't take everything as fact, take it all as a whole and then sort out what you in your own mind sounds credible.
Ask specific questions once again, and be prepared for some of the crap thats is not credible.
Agility is fun, so is tracking. Most all of it is hard work and takes time to master.
I'm no expert by any means, I don't do Schutzhund myself.
Working line GSD's are a greater challenge in my opinion and not to be taken lightly.
Take your time and be prepared before you start.
Moons.
