Bear carlo

by Bear carlo on 02 June 2010 - 14:06

I am sick and tired of Bear eating his own stool. It's disgusting. Can anyone give me some advice how to stop this?

I know I'm asking for help but please don't advise rub his nose in it or hit his nose, cause I quite simply will not do that. I would like a practical way to stop him if possible?

Thanks for reading and any advice offered.

Harry.

Are his stools firm, or are they quite loose?

Sometimes a dog will eat their stools if they haven't digested the food properly or if they are lacking in certain vitamins or if they have seen other dogs do it and it becomes a learned habit.

The only advice I could give, is to watch him when he goes out to toilet. As soon as he has finished, call him away, so there isn't the opportunity for him to consume any of it and to clean up after him straight away if he toilets in the garden.

What food are you feeding him?

It is a learned behavior from puppyhood. They watch mom do it for them and their littermates and they think this is normal. Don't waste money trying additives etc. And your dog is not lacking in nutrition, he does not do it because he is hungry...it is bahavior...habit if you will. The way to correct this is to take him out on a lead, praise him when he poops, if he turns to eat it give him a correction and tell him to "leave it" ...distract him from it, praise him if he leaves it you can even give him a treat. It is up to you to teach him it is wrong. Be diligent...Do not pick it up with him watching you...in his mind he will think you are eating it and want it all for yourself.  Don't ya love thinking like a dog! lol

Remiknds me of a true story.

Sold a puppy to a family - their first dog.  Thought I had given every bit of advice, and when they called me with this self same problem, my answer was similar to above, and I then said   "Beat him to it with the shovel".   You guessed it - I got a phone call back 2 days later saying the wife wouldnt let him beat the puppy with the shovel  what else could he do.!!!     Folks.     Mo.

I have heard from many folks that giving the dog a few chunks pineapple daily helps, but I can't speak from personal experience.  Good luck!

Penny, That is too funny...thankfully the wife was a kind & sensible person! I'm sure you made some verbage changes with giving instructions in that area

First you have to ask why is healthy dog doing this.
He is doing it because he recognizes in the food undigested proteins and fats and in the nature it is a matter of survival not to get these to waste.
Why are these proteins and fats still in stool of a healthy dog and why do the remedies described above work?

Because ANY COMMERCIAL DOG FOOD IS A CRAP REGARDLESS HOW SHINY THE BAG IS.
Why?:
1. Any commercial dog food is void of live enzymes>That is why for example pineapple (enzyme bromeline) and other above described remedies works.
2.So called "balanced " diet is overloaded with nutrition and the digestive tract (DT) of the dog is overwhelmed. Dogs in nature eat bugs and berries, mice and meat and so on and are just about 99% ofthe time hungry . This is different from our "scientific " "ballaced" nutrition.
3. Feeding pups more then 1 x per day. Pup's DT is again overwhelmed. Besides pups grow too fast and have higher propensity to HD.(The Hedammar Cornell Study).
Advice:
1.Lightly cooked meat or raw (with live enzymes) if you like mixed with small amount of raw vegetables or fruit (make sure that these are non toxic to dogs).
2.No supplements!! Only supplement allowed is meat. Meat is best supplement. Use different kind of meat.
3. Make sure then when pups are done eating they are still little hungry.
4. Feed one x per day.

There are products on the market, if all else fails, to put on the food that makes the feces 'undesirable ' to the dog.  One I have used is called 'potty mouth' and there are others as well.

Distaste worked for my dogs.
Any petstore or vet probably has it.

by Bene61 on 03 June 2010 - 01:06

You are speaking of a condition called 'Corophagia". Hopefully I spelled it correctly. Some of the previous posters have good advice in reference to quality foods and vitamins these are a must. You can obtain powder to add to the food or pills
that make the doo doo very undesireable. Most likely a combination of food vitamins and the powdered additive will accomplish the task in short order. Your vet also can help.

I've tried pineapple, I've tried additives, I've tried hot sauce...the only thing that works for me is to go out with her, watch her do her business, call her away and put her inside while I go pick it up and dispose of  it.  The very next time she goes out she makes a bee line for that last potty spot and looks at me like "where'd it go?":  She gets a treat for doing her business and going "inside" which is her command word for just that.  No matter what else is going on in the yard, if she won't come to me when I call her, all I have to do is say "inside" and she's at the door.  Opossums are visiting the yard and driving her nuts but inside will call her away.  She's strange, I know. LOL
