Uber Land

After being a member of this board for years, reading countless threads and opinions, I personally would like to hear what other people think makes a german shepherd, a german shepherd.

Is it a dogs color? how many ribbons or trophies it has won?  is it it's proud SV heritage?

I believe it was Max that stated "No Good Dog can be a bad color".  So why does the issue of color or pattern cause such anger and arguements?

So what makes a GSD?

Just a few random off the top of the head thoughts:

Go anywhere & do anything
Intelligence & ability to reason
Loyalty & faithfulness to their owners/family/pack
No loyalty & aloofness to anyone who's not in their pack & distinguish if it's a threat or not.

Because some people breed specifically for these colours with little, if any, thought for anything else!  There is a breed standard for a very good reason!  WHY would anyone want to produce something contrary to the breed standard?  Look at the dogs these people have, they are poor indeed and should NOT be bred from at all imo.

Like my American friends say... you can't fix stupid.

What makes a GSD??? Why a mummy GSD and a daddy GSD makes a GSD, lol.
Totally agree Miss beeb.

A GSD is the best there is.

They may not have the hardest bite, be the fastest, or hit the hardest, but they are the all round dog, that can do just about anythings.  They give everything they have at everything they do.  Their main goal in life is to please their masters, no matter their color or pattern.  They all love life to the fullest every day.  A good example of this is the dog named "Courage" that we all have been reading about for some time.  In my opion there is no other breed!!!

The noble look and face expression is the first thing that catches my eye in a GSD, then intelligence & firmness, then beautiful structure and rich color . All that which caught my eye in the first place vanishes if he behaves unsure of himself or keeps his eyes down when looking at him or looks away from me.

What makes a GSD a GSD?  I'd say their drive, their intelligence (lol though sometimes they're too smart!) and their wonderful instincts, which are perfect for being the best dogs one could ask for!

Well that's all well and fine to quote von Stephanitz BUT if he were alive now and could see how things had become he might also say go with the standard...............I feel that people who are breeding for color aren't paying enough attention to their conformation--and I am a pastern/feet person btw--cause they gotta have the right structure to be able to do their job.  And it goes upward from there........................the standard is there for a reason.
