Slight limp yesterday, full on lame tonight.  Guess it's better we deal with it now as opposed to a week before NASS.

You mean your puppy has pano! Isn't that the "growing too fast" symptom?  What are you supposed to do next? I  your puppy!!!

Yep, my pup has it.  Not sure about the "growing too fast" part; every male I've ever raised has had it.  Only thing I can do is try to keep him quiet (wish me luck with that), give him some Rimadyl and wait it out.

Poor baby...give him half a non coated asprin twice a day and keep him quiet if at all possible.

by VomMarischal on 05 June 2010 - 02:06

Hey DebiSue, why non coated? Just curious....

Keith,

Sorry to hear about your puppy....How old is he?  And how old were your other males when they had pano?... I have heard pano mentioned before but really know nothing about it.

Sorry to hear that. Are you feeding puppy food? I have noticed that many puppies get it when they have been fed puppy food. (too much protine that they can't handle) hope Axle gets over it quickly.

Added: for a natural anti-inflamatory you can try Evening Primrose Oil.You can get it at the health food store.

Alternating lameness?  Pano can be a nutrition problem, may be due to rapid growth, "may" be too many calories in rich food or improper calcium/phosphorus ratio, what are you feeding?  Large breed puppy food?  The cause is truly unknown, there are theories it can be a viral issue, and other theories it's genetic, that's why it's seen so often in GSDs.

Aspirin does not matter what type.  Aspirin is aspirin.  Per my vet, it was pointless for me to give only Ascriptin, which is a bit more expensive, he said the coating wears off so fast it wouldn't matter.  Before giving anything check with your vet.  Rimadyl has more side effects than aspirin.  Aspirin is hard on the stomach, so feed it after they eat.

I've never fed puppy food...Canidae All Life Stages Formula is what I've fed for years.
