let me tell a little story.i,ll try not to waffle on too much.a couple with a few gsds moved homes to a trailer on a farm, owned by travellers(they have no problem with travellers).the travellers have a no.of dogs,a whippet,a l/c gsd.a shitzu and 2 jack russells.....ALL BITCHES.they also deal in horses and have a stallion on the premises.a day or 2 after this couple have been there, the owner asked the tenants wife if she would buy their dogs food and clean the dogs stables and give them a run round the stable yard as excercise for a reduction in rent.she agrees.dogs changed from crappy complete food to fresh mince ,veg, and chicken carcase for big dogs and wings for the small ones.all dogs come on in leaps and bounds.sleeping quarters maintained every day with shredded paper for bedding and shavings on remainder of floor +fresh drinking water.shortly after whippet disappears with no warning.ring up to see where she,s gone....OH SHE GONE TO BE MATED WILL BE BACK TOMORROW.landlord asks on return, when will she pup??Can yu pup her.on stating that when she pups she will have to be in their home under supervision, told ,OH NO HUMAN INTERVENTION IS BAD THATS WOT MAKES EM LOSE PUPPIES.All these bitches were mated and if this lady wasnt there the pups would not have survived.one pup was actually sold at 5 weeks as the purchaser wanted it as a birthday present,so even tho.they had been told it was against the law to sell a puppy under 6 weeks, she still went ahead and done it.with the shitzu the stud dog was left with the bitch for 7 days solid.they had obtained a male shitzu who wouldnt mate(he had a kc reg or so lady was told),so he was sold(matted as hell)but who cares.the owner wanted 300 quid, but purchaser would only give 200 and she stuck to her guns.now to the point, the owner intended to apply to kc to become an ABS breeder, had all the paperwork didnt she,was prepared to pay the money and was also prepared to falsify the pedigree.she was also prepared to mate her gsd,who wasnt hip scored to a male ,who was also not hip scored and suffered from EPI.she was going to say that both were scored and not mention the condition of the male.NOW IS THIS THE TYPE OF PERSON YU WOULD WANT TO BUY A GSD OR ANY PUP FROM????????She didnt even whelp the bitches herself nor provide any extras, the lady whelped them by candle light in the trailer. And then the RSPCA were called by the police on a drugs raid and she had the audacity to tell the RSPCA inspector that the lady hadnt looked after them properly, thinking that that statement would get her off the hook.luckily the dogs the inspector was talking about were her sisters, which were being seen to by her sister.they were taken away, but unfortunately were given back.this couple were eventually turfed out and made homeless and their dogs were taken by the dog warden to the local pound.luckily for them the couple rang round and good friends helped out and the dogs were collected from the rescue kennels and are now back with their ownersTHIS IS A TRUE STORY.i know its a little bit off the thread, but these people are potential puppy farmers who have no love for their animals,do not know the first thing about the care and welfare of their animals.THEY ARE IN IT FOR THE MONEY.her mum even bragged that she,d had had a good year as both her bitches had come into season every 4 months.they even had an 8 month old shitzu come in season at 8 months and were going to mate it.THIS IS REALLY WHERE THE RSPCA SHOULD BE LOOKING AT..THIS LADY COULD LIE FOR ENGLAND..

Yes, I agree with your sentiment member, that in its current form, the scheme is misleading and lacks teeth, however, I will remain unconvinced on your theory that if we had mandatory minimum requirements with an ABS scheme, the registrations would have reduced across the board in the last 15 years, certainly with the situation as it currently stands today. They will simply continue to breed outside the scheme and continue to register their litters with the KC. There is not a statuary requirement to join a fully robust scheme even if there was one.

However, I do not agree with the all out blanket campaign to discredit the scheme and turn the puppy buying pubic towards pet shops and backyard breeders and undermine the good work that some other breeds have done so far.  If people here want to do something constructive, then campaign to get it improved.

You campaign to get it improved... it has been tried and the KC's dusty old chestnut of, "we are trying to encourage breeders" gets wheeled out.

The GSDP offered the two tier registration system as a perfect solution for them... they haven't even bothered to reply!  If you think you can make headway... good on you, let us know how you get on!

Meanwhile, I will tell all and sundry, that it's crapola... worse than worthless poop!

an excellent post missbeeb - hits the spot, spot on.

These ABS members are being "protective" towards their puppy sales, rather than pressing hard for 'meaningful & measurable' health screening;

The Kennel Club are only into VISIBLE faults - seen at SHOWS, they have NO intention of assessing such faults in ABS breeders stock, NO NO NO, cannot do that can they? it would damage their golder rule - REVENUE comes first, and BULLSHIT a very close second.
Their KC ABS embraces BOTH very nicely.

It should be known as - The Kennel Club "Accredited BS"

No, I do not breed so I have no gain whatsoever in the ABS selling puppies come what may. Simply a member of Joe Public that owns GSD and my interest lies only in the health and welfare of the breed.

The general health of any breed depends on the overall gene pool.  I suppose you are all aware of the FCI approved international breeding strategies to enhance canine genetic health.  Approved by the breeding commission in Naples - 23 May 2009.

I will say it again - the GSDL who I gather will lead the breakaway faction (non signers of the undertaking)
DO NOT EVEN HAVE A HEALTH PAGE, and make FEWER recommendations on health testing than the KC.  Anyone else care to comment on that ?

 Watch this space - Dingo......

Most appropriate names for the Kennel Club "ABS"

1) The Kennel Club   "Discredited Breeders Scheme"
2) The Kennel Club   "Accredited 'BS'

by Dingodog on 05 April 2010 - 10:04

I've been watching the sad blank space on the GSDL website for years David, and you know what.....it's still there, nothing has changed. It is still less informative and recommends LESS THAN THE KC WEBSITE in terms of health and health testing. INCREDIBLE, no - MIND BLOWING. Leading the GSD forward, guardians of the health of the GSD??? Informing the public ????

And you talk about the KC being useless..........priceless.

I notice you didn't care to comment on the actual content of my post, no, just play around with some more silly names for the ABS scheme.  Nero, Rome, fiddling and burning spring to mind.

Someone, somewhere may possibly start to scurry around and put this right. Let's see whether the emphasis is on criticising the KC or getting your own house in order. What a clanger :)

GSD Partnership (GSDP) Health and Welfare “Planned Improvement Programme” (PIP)
The GSD Partnership is made up of the following National GSD organisations: These being the German Shepherd Dog Breed Council (GSD-BC), the British Association of German Shepherd Dogs (BAGSD) and the German Shepherd Dog League of Great Britain (GSDL).

This is the list of improvements which have been purposefully side stepped by the Kennel Club.
1) The breed name of German Shepherd Dog (Alsatian) should be brought into line with the rest of the World and changed to German Shepherd Dog. This will also avoid the confusion that exists with the general public who often believe that there are 2 different types/breeds - the German Shepherd Dog and the Alsatian.
2) Introduction of a mandatory breed survey before being allowed to be bred from.
3) No female under the age of 21 months should be bred from.
4) No male under the age of 18 months should be bred from.
5) Inbreeding closer than 3, 2 or 2, 3 should not be accepted.
6) Mandatory training scheme for Judges with a scrutiny panel of senior breed judges empowered by the KC and the Partners who will monitor judge’s adhesion to the rules, with regular forums for discussion.
7) Reduction of the judges list to an active register and qualified list
8) Line breeding to be shown on the KC pedigree in order to differentiate.
9) A quick win in differentiating GSDs who have had tests from those who have not would be for the KC to acknowledge international working Health and Working tests on Pedigrees. The standard of a good proportion of GSDs registered with the KC would be raised demonstrably.
10) Future breeding standards:-
11) Any puppies registered by the Kennel Club must have parents who have both been hip X-rayed and each parent have achieved a total score of 20 or less, (with one side being no higher than 12) or a recognised overseas grade which is similar.
12) Any puppies registered by the Kennel Club must have parents who have both been elbow X-rayed and either graded by the BVA or have achieved a recognised overseas status.
13) The sire of any puppies registered by the Kennel Club must have passed a haemophilia test if bred in the UK.
14) Any puppies registered by the Kennel Club must have parents who have both been either tattooed or micro-chipped for identification purposes, in order for the individual dog to match his/her documentation.
15) The parents of every puppy to be registered by the Kennel Club must have had DNA identification recorded with the Kennel Club or a recognised overseas authority.
16) Any puppies registered by the Kennel Club should conform to the Breed Standard colour requirement.
17) The parents of any puppies registered by the Kennel Club must have passed a Breed Survey (in the year in which the animal attains 2 years of age - or older) either in the U.K. or with a recognised overseas authority.
18) The U.K. Breed Survey to be upgraded to include a fitness/endurance test similar to the ' (AD) required by International WUSV authorities.
19) The parents of any puppies registered by the Kennel Club should have achieved either a recognised Kennel Club or WUSV working qualification, with the minimum being a Gold Kennel Club Good Citizen Test or a BH qualification.
20) The breeder of any puppies registered by the Kennel Club should hold a valid Kennel Club prefix.
