Is this accepted standard practice with most breeders? The puppies are removed for short periods to create "stress" so that they will better handle stress as adults?

No. In fact most breeders don't even know what this means. We have been seeing the benefits of this for many years :-)

DOD: Bio-sensor puppy program (aka "Super Pup")
I just did this with my first litter and I while I have nothing to compare it too, I think that is helped. It is based on scientific study with control subjects and has been used for years in the DOD programs. I did it every morning when I did weigh-in's it did not take long and gave me a chance to hold the pups, observe them, introduce new stimuli to them.
I see more and more breeders doing this, but I am unsure how many really have taken the time to research it and understand the reasoning behind it.

I did it for like 2 days and then got sick of it. Puppies turned out fine. Well, of course, if I'd stuck with it, I'm sure they'd all be on a podium by now, but I don't have that much attention span.
That system has been used for like 30 years now.
