Anyone showing a stock coat? How do people feel about the stock coat? I have a female I'm considering keeping a female and the best pup is a stock coat. She is gorgeous in my opinion. Anyone working one in schutzhund?

Ron
The term "stock coat"...means it has a correct/normal coat.

Who decides wether or not it is a stockcoat, the breeder, the judge?

I know I've seen such a variation in coats,- many showlines  have longer coats.  Opinions vary so much.
Some call a dog a long stockcoat, that hasn't gotten nearly as much coat as mine has, just curious who really has the final say?

Kinda like the bi-colour thing.  Alot of variation there too, although, that doesn't create an issue obviously.

Red Sable,

The breeder should know if their puppies are "long stock coats" or "normal stock coats".......thats the breeders job to know such things.......although, it can be challenging at times.
There is no such "proper" coat term as "Plush Coats".......it's just another "made" term to describe the looks of a coat,...such as (flat, tight, short, open, etc..etc...)
The only three recognized correct terms are......
1) Stock Coat     (normal/proper coat with undercoat)
2) Long Stock Coat   (long coated dog with undercoat)
3) Long Hair Coat   (long haired dog without correct undercoat)   This coat type is a disqualifying fault.

The ultimate stock coat is thick, coarse and has some length to the guard hairs.
Long stock coats have more.......they have hair in & behind the ears, some have much fuller tails, feathering on legs, feet  and hind quarters.......the length & fullness of body hair varies from dog to dog.......
Until recently....in SV Conformation Shows.....a long stock coated dog would be placed at the rear of any class.

Hope that helps...

Thanks Robin.

It bothers me the way so many breeders charge a significantly larger amount for a longer haired dog.  (not my breeder, he charged me less, very good breeder) but some definitley take advantage of the fuzzy puppy.

I was told recently by a lady from Germany that a Plush coat is considered a Stock coat in Germany.  I don't understand the whole stock coat thing myself.  I have a male that has a longer than normal coat, with thick feathers on his back end and a full tail.  I asked her if he was a plush coat and she said that Plush was a stock coat.  So at this point I've heard so many things I myself am confused...

What do you all think he is?

I'd say he is a stock coat.  (nice dog btw!)
Personally, I don't think the breeder is always right, and if you show it, than the judge will be the deciding factor.

I have no problem with a dog being a LSC, if the structure and temperament is right.

I'll get a recent picture of mine today and show you her coat.
