My 7yr.old German Shepherd was kenneled  during Christmas and when she came home she started pooping a lot with blood.  I was told she has bacteria in her lower intestine by two vets.  She was first put on 500mg of Metronidazole.  next she was given a shot of penicillon and amoxicilln and back on metronidazole.   This has been going on since the first of January.  Any thoughts?  She is other wise healthy but I noticed now after she goes she is sitting like her butt is sore.  No worms or eggs showed up in the fetal exam just bacteria.

Hi Wild, I am sure they have expressed her anal glands  do another fecal sample to see if there is still bacteria overgrowth.
Also maybe have your vet because she was on amoxicillin may need some probiotics. Maybe use iams prostora seems to be a great product.
Always,
Cee

I would ask them if it would be a good idea to panacur the dog, fecals can be notoriously inaccurate in detecting certain parasites

Yes, organizims like Giardia are sometimes very difficult to detect. I agree with Lief.

Poor thing and poor Wildman.  Keep us posted on her condition.  I don't have any words of wisdom other than to feed yogurt to help balance out her gut bacteria.  Good luck

Hi Wild I had a female with bacteria overgrowth she had to have antibiotics and prednisolin tabs she must have both to keep the condition under control she never put on much weight but lived a full happy normal life she passed away when she was 11 years old good luck with her and I hope she gets better very soon

If it were me  I would probably call the kennel and ask them ''er uh have you ever had any complaints about any worms etc cause after we got the dog home this is what happened ......''  If the Vet rules everything else out and keeps insisting its bacterial  I would ask them '' should we use  Tylan? even Tribrissen  or better yet culture it,?

Sounds like whip worm to me.Panacur for 5 days ASAP, even takes care of giardia.

If you want to cover the bases, a second cours of 5 dats one week later will kill giardia.  Giardia has a life cycle and that is why the second course of treatment.  My vet warned me to make sure that I did the second week.  She said you really don't want to go into chronic Giardia.

There are lots of threads here on experiences treating these illnesses.  Just click on "Seardh Messageboard"  and put in a couple of key words, like "Giardia" and then try "whip worm" and then try "panacur" and whatever else you can think of.

Good Luck,

Michele
