I heard on a list a few days ago and now it's official. Manfred Heyne, the wonderful German breeder and herder, has died after a serious operation. He was 80 years old.
The really good German herders are becoming fewer and fewer. As most of you know, our chosen breed the GSD, was developed as a herding and protecting dog.

Sorry to hear the news. I've been fascinated by the things I've read about him, although I never met him in person.

Outside the closemindedness of the schutzhund world, he can rest having understood, taken great risk and sacrificed more for this breed than most here ever will. Manfred recognized the importance of the german shepherd's abilty and self-taken responsibility to work independantly of its handler, and outside the scope of patterned routines. And with that, comes the clarity and assurance of proper working behavior that separates the tending dog from its more 'specialized' sporting counterparts. Not all tending dogs are gifted in this way, and not all sporting dogs without it. But, if schutzhund were the only testing criteria for our breed, this characteristic could easily be lost.

A great man has passed. Probably one of the most knowledgeable people about raising, breeding and training german shepherd dogs to do sheep herding there ever was. the guy won the German HG (herding trial nationals) 13 times! I don;t know if that was ever surpassed and beat by anyone.
Here is a thread that was started by me on this database not too long ago that discusses this man and contains his life story as well. His life story reads like a John Le Carre novel from the cold war.

RIP old man, there is a lot of sheep on the other side. And, with a pointed ears dog at your side that will set them straight with your help and guidance.

Daryl has captured the essence of what the loss of the great herding breeders means for the GSD. Other breeds excel at sport. Only the GSD also excels at HGH and without the breeders who breed for those specific qualities in a dog, we will lose this capability. I hope that doesn't happen.
Indeed, RIP Manfred Heyne with all your dogs who went before you to keep you company in heaven's green fields.

He championed the breed and understood "true Shepherd temperament" as very few did. He was against patterned breeding and patterned training which is prevalent in the show/sport world. Hopefully, his followers, like Ellen Nickesberg will have a like impact on the breed in the future....RIP.
