I think a dog over 90 lbs is useless. Coincidentally, my bitch is 89 lbs.

Just kidding! I know that's obscenely large. So I bred her to a 70 lb male and got 70 lb daughters out of her. MUCH better. And guess what? They are every bit as tough as their mom.

I wonder why all these police departments are going with Mals if bigger is better?

Aaahh phooey. He just starts this crap to rile us up. He KNOWS his dog is too big. I'm not riled; I'm laughing at him this time. It's like he LIKES to feel sneered at......weird.

My bitch is just shy of 60 lbs.  Her sire was 85 lbs & dam was 65 lbs.  So, she's a little peanut.  She still is good dog.  And doing well in PP   I think better her be small than huge and can't work at all.

Hey, she's within the standard. What more could you ask beside working ability?

My male is small, even by the standard. Slightly over 60 pounds full grown. Lean, and super FAST. It's all good with me, although I was disappointed he didn't get a little bigger (at first!) I'm a small woman and he is a LOT of dog in a small package.

Not a thing. Like someone else said, if I want a mastiff, I'll go buy one. I like GSDs that are medium-small size and crazy fast.

The advantage of having an over sized German Shepherd is it would be more intimidating to the uneducated stranger who you want to just keep on moving.

And thats the only advantage, an intimidating appearance only.   It will look just as large as it runs for its dog house.
If size is all that matters to you.

Now if it has drive, instinct, and intelligence, and its properly trained that might make a difference, but how many big dogs will you go through to find the one with the right stuff to be a German Shepherd Dog?

The list if disadvantages is a long list indeed.

Speed and agility I don't believe will be any easier to find only because of the breeding exclusively for size with no concern for ability.

Don't tell me a large animal can't be quick or agile because they can.
Tell a grizzly he's slow and cumbersome, tell it to a lion, tell it to a horse.

Size alone does not govern movement.

But try to get your over sized dog through a window or over a fence, this is about working dogs.
Try holding back this monster should it not be properly trained and won't obey you.

And lastly health issues.

I like the look of a large dog, but I don't want to own one, and knowing what I know about dogs I would not fear one solely based on his size.

My Wolf Hybrid weighed 220 pounds and the only thing that gave me pause was her instincts from her wild ancestors.

[quiote]My Benedict at 7 months weigh 75 and he is 25 inches tall. He is thin, but had pano from growing so fast,. How big do you think he will be? His dad is about 80 pounds and mom is 70.[/quote]

Usually he will not be bigger then his Sire, unless his grandfather was bigger, sometimes genes can go as far as 4 generations.
