Hi there , i hope i am posting this in the right place. I have been an admirer of the Banholz kennel for many years and would love to have been able to import one to the uk but the time was not right , however whilst doing a search for Gsd puppies here in the uk icame across a website , the lady has a Axel vom Banholz daughter that is liver, I really do not understand the concept of genetics really but see this as a chance to own a dog from lines i have admired for many years.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

A liver bitch, bred to a normal color male, would have normal color puppies--that is, if liver isn't lurking somewhere in the male's background. If it is, ALL the puppies could be liver. Most of us would never deliberately breed a liver dog. Why, when there are so many normal ones out there looking for homes? Well, some people will tell you they love the color and they have the right to own whatever color they want to...but it's not what a really good breeder would do. Maybe you could take breeding a liver bitch as a sign that the breeder might not be up to snuff...or that's how it seems to ME.

But puppies may stil have the liver gene as recessive and could surface again in future, isn't that correct?

Yes, because all a dog has to have is one liver gene from each parent. You end up with some liver pups, some normal pups, and some normal LOOKING ones who carry liver. Sadly, you can't tell the second and third groups apart until you breed them with a dog known to carry liver...Does anybody know if some other color such as bi-color or black is more recessive than liver? In other words, can a black or bi carry liver? That's what I'm wishing I knew. I know a sable or b/t can, but what about the less dominant colors? Or is it entirely separate, that dilute thing? I think liver is dilute of black, but if you look at the photo of my girl she is definitely a sable-marked liver; only the black pigment is ruined.
