I bathe my dog the day before the show and brush as needed. I also make sure nails are trimmed. Day of the show, I spray the dog with water or a leave-on coat conditioner and brush again to remove excess undercoat. I make sure the ears are cleaned. If the nose is dry I apply a little vasoline. That's really it. I have a pin brush and an undercoat rake. Ear wips, nail clippers, vasoline, and spray bottle. The dog just needs to be clean and not have undercoat shedding all over.

No prob. I should say, I show my dog in UKC and SV-style rings (WDA and UScA). AKC might require more grooming, I'm not sure. Also my dog is very rich red and very solid black, so I don't have any reason to erm, "enhance" his coat or color. The color is good and it's healthy and shiny on its own so I don't really need to condition it either. The water or coat spray just helps me brush out all the loose coat and take care of any cow licks. Feed the dog a good diet and keep him in a good weight and athletic physical condition. In the SV rings many judges are very critical on size/weight. When I bathe my dog the night before, I usually go to a professionally setup grooming station so I can blow dry him backwards with the high velocity dryer and really fluff him up. He does not have exceptionally long hair so I've never trimmed any hair. He used to have this little black curl on the end of his tail and I thought about cutting it off but decided it was too cute. Now his tail is bushy and it blends in.
