My two yr old gsd just started her forth heat cycle but its has only been four months since her last. In the past they have been five months apart, although from what I've been told it should be closer to six. Care to share some yrs of wisdom on the subject?

Bitches can many times either come in early, late, or even have "split" cycles. Weather, stress, etc. all play parts in when they come in heat, I'd not worry about it, just watch her, and keep records so you can keep track of her cycles.

Our gal came into heat a full 6 weeks prior to when we expected this fall also. I checked around and seems a lot of people are experiencing the same thing... maybe they know something about the coming winter that we don't... Anyhow, it means that our plans to breed her next month are shot, as is the appointment to have her OFA done this week. We'll just back off, OFA her in a couple of months and breed her in the spring if things fall right. Just means another 3 weeks of playing musical crates with our male so they don't get together.

I have a bitch whose cycle is off and like Windwalker I have heard a lot of people with that problem this year. It has also been a really wierd year for weather, and blowing of coats etc. Wldn't worry about it yet. I know that's easy to say when it's not your bitch esp if you want to breed her. Your vet can do smears and progesterone testings or even run hormone levels to see if everything is going ok with her physically if you just want to put your mind at rest. If you do, have them do thyroid too.

I've had 3 females also come into heat early this year. They blew their coats early with the extreme shifts in weather also.
1 female was 3 months early, the other 2 were 6-4 weeks early. While another is over a month late.
I've noticed with odd weather patterns = off heat cycles.
Like Donnerstorm suggested you can always have her checked by your vet if concern.

My bitch is 20 months old, and has cycled every 4 months (120 days) since she was 11 months old. I'm not one of the lucky ones with 6 month cycles!
Hoping the cycle lengthens and she moves to 2/year sooner than later.

I read that bitches that come into heat too frequently (less than four months apart) may well have reproductive problems.

Nearly all my girls have cycles every four months. It's fairly common, especially in gsds. I have four generations of girls, so obviously no repro probs. LOL

A females reproductive cycle is determined by her mother. She carries the same genes as her dam and should mirror her dams reproductive cycle. My bitch cycles every 8 months, was late coming in for her first heat (10 mos). With that said, her last two heat cycles have been different from her past cycles. She turned 5 this past June. Her two daughters from her first litter that are intact, were also about 10mos with their first cycle. Her daughter from this last litter who is now 8 mos has yet to come into heat, but I dont expect her to yet. Raspberry leaves extract has often been used to regulate the female reproductive tract.
