How long in time after mating do sperms mature and travel to the eggs to fertilize them in natural mating?

Often the ideal time to breed is 2 and 4 days after ovulation.

I have some doubt about mating on day 4 after ovulation as ideal.

Will the sperms catch the eggs in time if mating is 4 days after ovulation. Some eggs live only 4 days after ovulation, although many 5 days.

It is my understanding that sperm can survive 7 days.

As far as I know Sperms are live and fertile the minute they are out, what is certain is that Sperms live and remain very well active for 48 hours, after this time some die, some become less active and probability of fertility becomes less after the 48 hours, that said does not exclude that some Sperms might fertilize eggs at much later time than 48 hours.

As for the best timing for matings in regards to ovulation, first blood etc I have no idea.

It is not the sperms life that I am refering to.

It is the eggs' life.

It is puzzling to me that many articles say day 2 and day 4 after ovulation is ideal for mating

Some eggs do die after just 4 days, although many live an extra day.

So mating on day 4 after ovulation often works well but is not ideal, unless the sperms can travel to the eggs and ready within a couple of hours.

I think mating on days 1 and 3 after ovulation is ideal.

How long do sperms take to reach the eggs and be ready to fertilize them?

by HighDesertGSD on 30 September 2011 - 22:09

Some sperms can live to seven days does not mean the 95% of them will.

If you want the largest litter then you have to think of optimal circumstances, which is the max sperms activity/readiness/accessbility to eggs 2 to 4 days after ovulation.

Some eggs live for 5 days, some only 4 days. Or ovulation is a process that takes a day so the early eggs die one day sooner.

I have heard with a live mating is your best bet for longer sperm life for some reason chilled or frozen must shorten the life for some reason.

Yes, but the time of max sperm activity must also coincide between day 2 and day 4, often day 5, after ovulation when the eggs are fertile.
