Ukranian Shepherd - Page 1

I had a guy call the kennel today looking to rehome his Ukranian shepherd. Is this actually a breed, or does it just mean a GSD from Ukranian lines?

Linda Shaw does a great job of describing dog breeds that are related to, or look similar to the GSD, but her site is under renovation right now, so I can't view it. I also drew a blank when I Googled Ukranian shepherd, so I'm guessing he probably meant his dog was a GSD from the Ukraine. The groomer who answered the phone said his accent was very hard to understand, and she had a dog on the table, so she didn't make any effort to get details from him!

Anyone know ANYTHING about GSDs from the Ukraine?

It might be a guardian dog which is Not a German Shepherd and if it is a guardian dog does not act like a GSD.

Sunsilver...most Ukranian Shepherds that I seen are very similar looking to show GSD but with ability to work...

although I have seen "Volkodav" dogs or "Kavkazskaya ovcharka" refered to as Ukranian shepherds but that was usually done by people who are selling them at flea markets, and trying to pass them off as shepherds.

I am from Ukraine.
There is no such breed as "ukraininan shepherd" and no similar breeds. "Kavkazskaya ovcharka" is from Kaukasus (Russia) and don't ever look like GSD.
