I have a question about the amount of supplements needed for individual dogs/sizes.  Is the recommended daily dosage for a dog different than for humans?  If not, where do I find this information?

First of all, I do need the daily amounts, second I need to break it down by portion.  I have a friend who has a beagle and we plan on making the food together.  We have been researching for two months and have come up with a recipe we'd like to try.  If the amount of supplement does not go by weight (as in humans, theres just a daily recommended dosage in general), would we have to add more supplements to the smaller portions for the beagel??

"Make" the food? Don't make your life harder than it needs to be. Just feed your dog 10% organ meats, 10% non-weight-bearing bone, and 80% muscle tissue. You can add some salmon oil caps, and depending on your dog, that will likely be all it needs. Feed 2-4% of the dog's body weight per day, and adjust it if the dog gets fat or thin. Or, you can go prey model and let the dog gorge every few days and not eat between these large feedings.

The closer you can get to the way nature does it, the better. Don't do a lot of preparation! Just hand the food to the dog.

Since I travel with my dog, it would be easier to process into patties and freeze.  I will add small amounts of vegetables and fruit along with oils and supplements.  It would be easier for me if it was made ahead, frozen and set out to thaw before each meal.  I could also pack them in a cooler if I'm on the road and it would keep for a couple of days after thawing.  Some ingredients could also be added fresh to the pre-made patties (such as whole egg, yogurt, etc.).

I'm new to this and just want to make sure I'm giving him everything he needs.

The amount of supplement goes by the weight of the dog. You didn't specify what you are looking at feeding - be careful not to overdo it. I was giving supplements with every meal (I feed twice a day) for a while before coming to the conclusion that I was giving too much - now I give salmon oil and Vit E every day, but the powdered supplements I use just three times a week (Mon-Weds-Fri) in each meal. I get almost all my stuff from Berte's Naturals, www.b-naturals.com because they are specifically formulated for dogs, with the recommended amounts on the label, and I don't have to try figuring out how to adapt a human dose appropriately. Plus they are properly balanced......

Remember to keep your diet varied - don't just feed chicken or beef. As well as these two I use green tripe (not canned), pork, lamb, game, fish, organ meat (gizzards, liver, kidney), heart, turkey.

To me, the easiest way to feed while traveling is go to the grocery store and get a package of meat each day, whatever is on sale.

I can get the meat much cheaper if I buy in bulk from my butcher.  It's also a better quality than you get in the supermarket.  This is another reason I'd like to make it ahead.  There are salts and preservatives in most of the chicken bought at the local grocery.

Thank you for your input VomMarishcal, perhaps I will get to that point down the road.  Right now I'm sticking with what I've found through my own research and what I believe will work best for my situation.

AnjaBlue, you answered my question exactly!  Thank you.  And also, thanks for the link.

Glad I could help -PM me anytime if you need additional info.

The link I posted above also has invaluable information on raw feeding for adults and puppies, (recipes , plus a large archive (newsletters) on a variety of health topics. The woman who developed this company has a PhD in nutrition, and many years of experience. (Is also a breeder - Rottweilers.)  She knows what she is talking about.  The only thing I changed was to stop giving supplements every day - I didn't think my dogs needed them that often.

Good luck - another site you might want to check is www.dogaware.com Complements and adds to the site I gave you.
