First let me start off by saying I am a super-noob and I do not pretend to be anything else. However, croups still confuse me a bit. I am not asking for a specific type of GSD (American, German, etc) just what everyone's personal opinion is and why they think that? Also, what are the reprocussion when you have a faulty croup? Any illustrations are good but I am fairly good with just descriptions. Thanks for any help guys.

Hello Gwaltney,

An intelligent question concerning the GSD here on the PDB, I'm overwhelmed.

In a nutshell, the croup is the attachment point for all those powerful thigh muscles.

Too short and not as much area for muscle, power in the rear thrust (see almost any Am. S/L.)

Long = more area for muscle in the thigh.

Too Steep can = less follow through or extension in the rear stroke

Too flat can affect the under reach of the rear in gaiting and the ability of the dog to thrust himself forward.

Here is what in my opinion a very excellent croup, both in length and angle.

Thank you. That does help! Lovely dog by the way. Any input from others is welcomed too.

I know the only way to learn is to make a fool of myself and ask really stupid questions but better than I learn the right way than have to unlearn a bunch of garbage!

Gwalt,

Even after been involved in a couple of threads on the PDB regarding croups & thinking I understood it at the time I can still get confused. So don't worry, you're not alone.

Anyhow have a look at these previous threads which may help:
