I would like to know why people tattoo their puppies ears if it is not going to be legible anyway. I have picked up (I am an ACO) several dogs now with ilegiable tattoos. Tonight I picked up a very handsome obvious West German Show Line young, neutered male, no microchip but a tattoo which I can only make out the last few digits which are G (or 6) then a 0 (or 6), then 7 then H/M/N (can't tell) and 3 there are two more at the front but couldn't even guess.

Very nice, semi timid young guy Blk/Red, with an amped up (extra prongs) Invisible Fence Brand collar (who was running free for an hour or so in a terrential downpour).

Does the tatto sound familiar to any breeders in New England with show lines?

That's awesome that the dog's owner was found. I do agree some tattoo's just are not readable, which 1 of my pups you can hardly read her tattoo, but I didn't tattoo her either the breeder did. They are also micro chipped but the scanner doesn't pick it up, b/c they were done in Germany, so I will most likely micro chip them again. Rather be safe than sorry. I have heard that if you tattoo in their inner thigh that it is easier to be able to read, is this true?

Inner thigh tattoo is easy to alter.  Also, I'm not too sure I would want to try to turn a strange large dog over to look

Speaking for myself, my dog was not tattooed as a way to be recovered if he were lost.  That is why I got a microchip and why he wears a flat collar with a brass ID plate with three phone numbers on it.  The tattoo is to fulfill the requirement of unique, permanent marking for Schutzhund and show competition.  As I said, he is also chipped, and both the tat and the chip are WDA certified, should the tat ever fade.  Since there is really no way for me to associate my name and contact information with the tattoo, I don't assume it would help me find my dog if he were lost.  At best it would just help me prove my ownership.

I wouldn't want to turn over an unknown dog either to look at it's tattoo on it's inner thigh, I was just merely saying I have heard people doing the tattoo there. I personally do not tattoo my puppies at all. I do micro chip them all. The pups I received from Germany were tattooed and micro chipped though. The micro chip that they used does me no good since our scanner doesn't pick it up over here yet.
