Hello!  I'm new here and searching for some information.  First a little background...I lost my GSD in May to cancer, he was 11yrs old.  I have recently began looking at breeders, researching bloodlines and the like to find my next GSD.  I am from WV and needless to say there isn't a plethora of breeders nearby so I was wondering how safe it is to have a new puppy shipped via air?  Which airlines would you recommend?  Any recommendations or preflight concerns?  The reason for m concern, I remember hearing years ago that many dogs were dying when shipped on various airlines.  I would rather not have another GSD if it means I am going to be risking his/her life.  I welcome any and all thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Stephanie, welcome!  I'm sorry to hear about your GSD.

I have bought one pup and  had it shipped.  I don't think I'd do it again for a few reasons.

1.  I really prefer seeing the parents in person, their temperment, how they work etc.

2.  It is a long haul for the pup.  Our pup was in a crate for 10 plus hours.  No one is allowed to let it out for a pee or anything until they reach their owners, which was  an hour after I got to the airport as I had to do running around to finish all the paperwork.

3. It cost 400 to ship the pup and cost me another 200 at the airport (taxes etc) to recieve it.

The puppy arrived healthy and happy so no concerns health wise.   All the best in your decision, let us know what you decide.

Hi Stephanie,

iám a Breeder here in Germany. In history i send many puppies to the USA.I hear no time that a puppy was died or ill.At some time they are 12- 16 hours on the way. There are no problems with the puppys.I think that it is very rarely  that a puppy died or anything other is not ok.

regards

Thanks for the input so far!  I guess I should've mentioned that I was only looking at breeders within the USA.  The thought of shipping overseas scares me beyond even considering it.

i have shipped a few pups, and they arrived safely.  i have received a pup from germany, and it was fine too.  non-stop flights are best, and the weather/time of day will matter.

from wv, there are a number of quality breeders within driving distance ( 1-4 hours)

good luck in your hunt

I agree,
I think you could find what your looking for within driving distance and save a new pup from a lot of stress.
Plus you get to meet the person and see where your pup comes from.

Hi Stephanie, and welcome to the forum.

I have recently shipped out 2 pups, 1 going to South Carolina, and the other to Virginia. It was a direct flight, which means they didn't have to get off 1 plane and on another. They did just fine with the flight. There is a new airliner that ONLY cater's to pets so they are not in cargo they are actually in first class, and are taken care of throughout their flight, as well as before and after. I have not used them yet as they didn't open up until after I shipped my 2 pups out. I personally rather see the people that are getting my pups, but sometimes that just isn't possible. I have had people drive 12-16 hours to pick up their pup as well.
I have just also imported 2 pups from Germany. They actually did really good for the long flight. No messes, etc in their crate.
