For me seems that she is a long coat.

Plush coat "usually" applies to show lines whose coats are not actually longcoat, but thicker and a bit longer than stock. They don't have the ear tufts or fringe. There are working lines dogs who can also be called plush coat. Personally, I think the plush coats are indications that dogs may be carrying coat factor and may throw coats. I say that because I have a male with a very thick coat that is a tad more than a very short stockcoat, and I know he has at least one great grandparent that produced coats.

Hello happy, both your dogs are "stock" or normal coated GSD.

My bitch that you have been helping me with would be considered "plush", but still a "stock" or normal coat. Plush is just a term that refers to a very heavy, thick coat.

All the dogs that I have seen at the club are "stock" coats, but they have varying length of hair and "thickness" of coat.

Molly.....you hit the nail on the head! Perfect terminology..."Yorkie look"....
A coated puppy can have the same "length or look" of coat in the show lines as the "stock coated" puppies......but the "face" is slightly different.  The always have a "Yorkie or Schnauzer-ish" looking face.....however;....that "look" changes fast as they reach 8-9 weeks old, and then you can really only tell by the areas around the ears...& the "hair type".
Thats why "we" taught ourselves to be able to distinguish them within a few days after birth.....

I think it will deifnetely be a long coat. By the way isnt that a bit small for a 7 week old German shepherd puppy?

does the pup have long hair in between its toes?

by happyday on 23 August 2009 - 22:08

Thanks Rik - that puts it in to terms I can understand....  I just have one question - what does it matter?  I have seen this type of poster on more than one occasion - I guess this is the show part of it - but why must we categorize what type of coat the dogs has?   Forgive my ignorance - I know everybody doesn't do schutzhund -- is this the show part of the GSD world that I know nothing of?  My question is ' can the dog work ?  or is she just pretty?   GSD need to work - pretty is as pretty does.....my momma always said........

Thanks Mystere you all ways come thru  to educate those that  don't have a clue - does this have to do with breeding?  what?  I still don't understand - why are there  so many threads that ask - "what kind of coat do you think this pup has"........

Is it that same division that is also going on that has to do with "working" or "show" line GSD's....?

Please EDUCATE ME!

Happyday, ¶For working line devoteés, I think it may be something one considers when considering breeding. As I mentioned, I think the plush coat "may" be an indication that dog carries genes for long-coat.

happyday, a long coat is considered not as desirable and under most circumstances will sell at a reduced price. not a fault in the U.S.,  but I have never seen one shown. I think they are disqualified from showing by the S.V.

There are long coats in all lines of the GSD. Working and show.

2 normal coated dogs can produce long coats since it is a recessive gene.  I think people just get antsy and want opinions from others here who have more experience in things like this.

It would have no effect on the working ability of the dog.

If you have never seen a long coat, here is one.
