Marking wise is there any way to tell what a black and tan pup will look like when they're an adult?
How dark the face will be will it be black or brown? Will they have a blanket or saddle pattern? If so how can you tell?

A breeder taught me a good way to judge pigment. Look at the toes and especially the nails. If the nails look like they've been dipped in India ink, the pup will have good pigment as an adult.

I wish I'd known this BEFORE I bought my pup! Her pigment is quite faded, though to look at her pic at 8 weeks old, you never would have guessed that would happen.

Sunsilver is right...take a look at my male and compare him to his father:

EDIT: These pics show sable dogs....my bad ahaha.

Wait, reread that and saw you said black/tan, woops. Still, Sunsilvers comments apply.

Every little bit helps. Is that how you tell how dark the sables are going to get to? So India ink black toenails is what I'm looking for.

I know color is not the most important thing but I was just curious. I'm keen on a black and tan gsd with a dark black face.

Does anyone have any puppy and adult pic?

From what I've seen with sables, if they have black nails, black on the tops of their paws and "tarheels" on their back legs, they're most likely going to be dark pigmented, or at least not fade too much. It's different with sables though, because they have a tendency to get darker with time. My dog's father seemed to be an exception to this.

Ok, I'll repost these since they're interesting, even if they're sable dogs.

father as older pup, note the light feet:

My dog as a pup, note the dark feet and nails:

Current pic of my dog showing color (bad focus):

Again, sables change color differently, but I think that dark toenails are a predictor for both.

Message got cut off...Same dog at 2 years... the sables change SO MUCH! And I still can't stack a dog...As you can see he's sticking his tongue out at me to tell me so!
