We just rescued a GSD Koda is 18 months old big and goofy he was rescued by a couple who took him from people they knew who are crackheads! He was 14 months old when they took him and very under weight less then 65lbs. He was mistreated but I dont know to what extent of abuse he suffered. The couple I got him from have got his weight up to 90+ lbs and he is beautiful his only problem is his ears they flop outward then bend in the center and point to the outside he looks goofy as can be. Just wondering if it is to late to help with his ears or if there is anything that can be done? He was nothing but skin and bones and his ribs could be counted when he was first rescued so I believe it is a nutritional problem and maybe from the abuse he was subjected to. He is the sweetest dog. I dont mind the ears flopping but just wondered if anything could be done

With out seeing the ears, I don't know how severe the cartilage is damaged. But, you could certainly try a few things.
Shave all of the hair off of his ears inside and out, to take the extra weight off of the ears, then go by some Dr. Scholl's Moleskin padding. Cut it to an oval shape to match the inside of his ears. You need to make sure that the ear gets cleaned out with alcohol or something to remove wax, or the moleskin won't adhere. Let the ears dry before putting the moleskin on.
It wouldn't hurt to give some cottage cheese.
give him some big large Femur bones to chew on to build some muscles in the jaw and around the head to support the ears.
Some of these things may not help, but you can certainly try.
good luck !

HI and congrats on your new boy! It always makes my day to hear of a dog in a bad situation get a new home. Bless you!
As Jamille mentioned, you could try taping his ears, but it could be poor breeding/bad pedigree and they may never stand. Do you know where the dog originally came from? Was he microchipped or tattooed? Does he have any paperwork?
I am fairly new to shepherds so can't help as far as if he is already too old for the ears to ever stand, but I'm sure someone with more experience will be happy to come on and help you out :)
I think I speak for everyone when we say we'd LOVE to see pics of your Koda :)
