My female GSD is has come in heat for the first time at the age of 10 months and she is urinating more often now. Is it normal?

Do I need to do something to make her comfortable? (Besides keeping away from the male dogs)

Sometimes they will get a urinary tract infection due to the increased licking down there, introducing extra bacteria.  Have the vet check a urine sample.

she  may just be marking her scent everywhere this is normal.

I thought my girl was leaving a calling card too frequently and we noticed that she was squatting every few minutes and producing very little urine...Yup, it was a UTI.  Take a sample to the vet.  It apparently is common with heats, especially if she is obsessed with cleaning herself.

My girl's first heat was a split heat (came in - went out - came in again) and it lasted about 2mo.  Just when I thought she was done after about 21 days she came back in with heavier bleeding and even more swelling.  Didn't help that she ended up with a UTI on top of it all.  Loads of fun!  Usually they last 21 -28 days.
