I cannot believe that so many people have to tape ears!

And as for those taping prior to exhibition? That really is cheating. Plain and simple.

Stop breeding from leather-eared animals with oversized batwings. Don't select a pup with leathery, heavy hangers. 

And as for accusations of sarcasm that have been directed at others on here, well, PLEASSSE.....if someone hasn't seen a flop eared GSD then they really haven't looked. Bad examples of the breed are all over the place.

Dante, I do agree they shouldn't be bred or shown. That said, it is a flaw that exists within the breed and I don't think anyone knowingly selects a pup that has the potential to have hanging ears. I think most people who buy a GSD prefer a dog with erect ears, whether the dog is a pet, show dog or working dog. I personally would do everything possible to help my dogs ears stand and in the end, if they remained floppy, I'd love the dog just as much. I just like the total look too much to do nothing.
