You have to go back far enough in generations to produce some multiple appearances of a single producer.   If in 20 generations there are still no common ancestors, then COI will still show zero, although that would not be true.  Working backward to find common ancestors without going all the way to the breeds beginnings excludes the fact that there were a limited number of founding producers for the breed, initially.  Those founders could provide a base number of sorts for overall COI for the entire breed.  But even since the breed's inception, there have been reductions in the overall diversity, when characteristics such as the brindle coat pattern for example have been "bred out".  Now, there is a broader population base living and producing in a given timeframe, and that allows greater variety to manifest itself into the breed in the instances of mutations, but those will rarely be of beneficial consequence, or at best a novelty, such as the panda pattern.

Reggie it may be simpler than that with what you are trying to use, there
might just not be enough info in the dbase your sheet uses if the pedigrees
are incomplete - hence it can give you a kennel average but shows zero %
as default for individuals. ?

@Blitzen.....yes

Not only is it confusing, calculating COI a totally useless concept.  There's nothing USEful you can DO with a practically arbitrary number, especially one that says nothing specific about the quality of genetics to which it is tied.  For some reason though, people find it as fascinating as fortunetelling by birth signs and the rolling of dice.

@Gustav - results?

by Gustav on 04 December 2012 - 17:12

Results for what? You asked me have I ever done COI, I answered yes......this information is only useful if you understand the traits and characteristics of the dogs that appear in COI.  I would expect any breeder that linebreeds to be aware of the concept, but I'm kinda flakey, so I'll let the experts explain this.

I guess that was a stupid question, wasn't it. It will never happen again.
