Never mind the dog, beware of owner is my motto as well. Too many people expect to be protected by someone or something else, like a cop or a dog. Nope, you are responsible for your own protection to my way of thinking. The dog is just there as a warning and deterrent.

Steve1, it really isn't that dangerous in the USA. Sometimes people think it is because of our news media where the motto is "if it bleeds, it leads." You hear all about the violent crimes, especially inner city gang crimes, but never a peep about all the times that people help each other out.  I myself live in a very nice area where the major danger to me and my dogs is the occasional mountain lion or perhaps a coyote.  Most of the USA is quite peaceful and civilized.

Domestic violence is another story and the women who expect their dogs to protect them from an estranged husband or boyfriend would be better off taking a self-defense class that includes firearms training as well as some other elementary self-defense methods.  As usual, JMO.

Sam
Exactly the way to go, If so many people who are vulnerable took up some form of Self defense Training instead of spending 1000's of dollars on G.S Dogs or anything other  Large breed dog which they because it is part of the family automatically expect that Dog to protect  them if an intruder breaks in, It will not happen in most cases
Unless that Dog it specifically trained to do that Job. Then that Dog also has to Know the difference between an intruder and the House owner and if that Dog is trained by someone else and bought in the Dog then must first of all bond and respect that family as a whole i do not say it cannot happen, but not what many folk on here are thinking there Dogs will do for them and they are wrong anyway as i said to expect there Dogs to fight for them whist they sit back
Regards the Self Defense I could tell you a True life story on that one, So i know for a fact that it does pay off,
But that too depends on what you want to learn,  Basic is very near good enough for most Folk it gives them an edge on an intruder for they will not be expecting it to happen
As Jim says a Small Dog like a Jack Russell or its like  is ideal to warn folk of an intruder, plus it is cheaper to feed, For me a German Shepherd is for the love of the Dog foremost, then secondly as a Friend, then thirdly we can work together in a Sport  Have Fun and make more human friends in the Process
That is what owning a German Shepherd Dog means to me, And i will protect it to the end if needs be, not the other way around
Then again Jim says he would not expect his own House Dogs to Protect him but he may expect his Working Partner Boomer  too help him out and i have no doubt the Dog would for working together every day produces a different kind of bond  between Dog and Man to a normal family dog, plus he is a trained dog
So Guys do as Sam suggests if you have any spare Cash to spend then go and learn some form of Self defense. It will be of better value to you in the long run,

My dog will protect me because it is in his nature to do so.  This was clear as a very young dog.   I do not play games with this.  There may be only one time in his life he has to do this.  If lucky, maybe never.
