Hans and other Breeders,
How do you screen buyers now, so that a situation such as this NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN? That poor pup!
I am glad that I am not a breeder! The worry alone would kill me!

I really don't think as a breeder that you can prevent something like this from happening. This was done all via phone and you cant always get a good read on people via phone especially if it is short conversation. Also with email being the main source of communication it makes it difficult as well.
I think you can screen calls as much as you think you can but at the end of the day you just hope the pup goes to a great home.

Dawn,
many breeders do what they can, screeningwise. But when it comes to send a pup either long distance, east to west cost US or Europe to US, jus a certain amount can be done. Basicly, you can not look beyond someones forhead !
I do google buyers names, if I have friends in the region of the buyers, I ask them......I talk to them on the phone, I exchange mails with them,...... it is no garanty.......I cannot tell you how many times I was promised to be informed, either by phone or mail, how the pup was recieved.......and never ever heared a word again.
It is difficult to devellop trust & that goes both ways.

I have a guy in California looking at one of my Malinois puppies right now and I am worried about this as well. All I know of him is what he tells me and who knows if that is true.

This is what bothers me about selling dogs. I have reposes 5 dogs in Canada and then another dog in NY after I found that he was abused. He had chain ingrown into the neck and was chained behind barn. He was 6 mo old. The neighbors called me. I just went there with bolt cutters. The owners of the dog just looked at me. I have just said:"Please do not say one word." And fortunately they did not. I cut the dog off and took him to the vet. It took a surgery to remove the chain.
You know I screen the best I can. I can read pretty well from in between the lines. But I am not clairvoyant. There were several people where I refused to sell them a dog. But in the end it is a crap shoot. You never know. I always urge people to call me if they have ANY questions or trouble with the dog. If people want to dump their dog then I always take them back.
