Rik,
Very well put, and I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Gustav, this is what I do not understand here. We can't discuss these issues here.
Maybe I have many years in pursuing gait and ignoring character and what the result is. Maybe you have many years in what is correct in character. Maybe another, such as Preston, has many years in what is correct in a pedigree. Maybe another, like slamdunc, has many years in selecting a GSD for real work.
We should be able to discuss these things from our own experience. To learn each from the other. Instead, we end up snapping at each other, and we are all brought here because we value the GSD in our own way.
Maybe a new person learns something from what we discuss and becomes the next great push for the GSD.
Instead, we are led off track by the trolls. Who call others dogs "shitters" because they do not agree with their own. Who make others feel stupid because english is not their first language. We belittle the new person because their first choice of a dog is not a fire breathing monster. When they only wish to share their joy in discovering the GSD.
Or their desire for knowledge does not exhibit knowledge in the questions they ask..
I do not consider anyone stupid who chooses the GSD as their companion, regardless of the package the dog comes in.
So, here is the pact I offer to you. Lets all insist that the GSD be be discussed in a positive manner.
Let's all insist that threads be restricted to the original intent. And ask Oli and the mods that they insure so.
Who can know what we learn from each other.

Rik,
I don't disagree with you conceptually. People in this breed have so much passion for the breed. I personally try to conduct my self in a manner in which what I am communicating can be received by as wide as audience as possible. This requires a certain amount of decorum.
As a person who has been around the breed for a long time most of what I write is geared to opening the eyes of the new people and giving them information to come to a conclusion based on as much reality as possible.
The breed has skewed off the path for a lot of people in which money and ego is primary. There are also many people posting on things that they have no first hand knowledge of and their beliefs are so far right or left that they are detrimental to the new person.
I'm really not concerned with trying to educate a person who only sees things through their ulterior agenda driven position. But there is a reason that the NASS video's reflect what they do, that some of the breed today has more drive than nerve, that much of the breed today has less nerve than needed to work, than much of the top conformation today is counterproductive to a top utility dog, and so on. These things have proliferated because of actions by breeders regardless of their intentions.
I try to help provide explanations on these developments, and let the newer people sort them out. In some cases with this breed, there is SO much denial of what the dog has evolved into, that people won't bring light on the subject but instead distort the message with exception cases in point, because they can't intelligently defend the status Quo. So the breed continues down the path. That's why I like the videos each year....what the eyes see......!
In closing, I have learned from some on this forum and I welcome input from all. Unfortunately, life doesn't give us unlimited time, so I tend to go to posts that I can be productive or that I want to be enlightened. Still, the person who wants to share joy in the breed and hear other's feel good stories, are also as important to the breed as the breeders, sport, working, and show.
Keep your posts worthy, Rik, and that is all you can do.

Schaeferhund,
Just in response to your comment regarding onme of the dogs paying down because "the woman screamed so harshly at it". This is actually called the "aus platz". The dog was intentionally trained to do that. He is definitely not handler sensitive I can assure you.

I wached the first few dogs and couldn't watch even one more. I'll say that the 3rd dog "Griff"? was refreshing. No problem watching him - the rest, how depressing is that. same old, same old. dogs that have no training, no heart or drive, or both. can't even watch it.

I know these are all SL - is there any video of WL dogs at these shows? Or is that taboo? How does wl fair at these events?
Rik you had a working line for a while - did you ever get to show her? What about the male you had for a while? Not sure if he was wl or sl though............

With the exception of the 3rd dog it was very sad & disheartening to watch.
Yesterday I took my puppy to class where there were 2 SL GSD puppies there. Beautiful dogs, but nervous in class, timid, difficult to train. 1 puppy had stage 2 heart disease, the other was so weak in the back end couldn't even make it over a mini a-Frame in class. Little children in class were asking their parents why did the (GSD SL puppies ) walk that way, are they hurt? Another asked what was wrong with that puppy?
The trainer later asked me why she keeps seeing so many GSD's now that can't even jump over a basic low training hurdle in agility class as adults.
Also a very sad note both owners of the SL GSD puppies asked me what kind of dog I had, they were shocked at the difference in my WL GSD puppy. But to not even know we had the same breed!
I might own WL GSD's but these are all hard blows to me, since this is all our breed & they still represent the GSD. I've owned SL & WL GSD's since the late 70's. Back then you could still find a decent SL dog that you could work / sport. Now It's just shameful what is happening to our breed.
Breeders & SV really need to take a hard look at what's happening to our breed. Maybe new test / title standards-?

yogi, I had a Javir daughter. She developed an abscess in uterus after first heat. She passed away from complications of surgery.
She was really the dog I was hoping to get all along. Thought I had hit the jack pot.
best,
Rik
