Oh....so I didn't invent or create the word....mea cuppa .....Sad Smile........I thought it came to me in a dream one night .  Oh Well, that's why I pick and choose which threads I participate in....lol!

How about those "balanced gsd's"?  Often brought up in those threads you participate, would you do the honor, or at least point the way?  If I had only invented bacon, I wouldn't be so bothersome to the forum's constituency.

There are software programs available to compute the COI of any purebred dog. These programs will also generated pedigrees with COI  percentages assigned to each dog. I find them difficult to read and understand, but some of you might not.  I've not seen a COI on a GSD but I'm guessing it would indicate a high percentage of inbreeding since all GSD's go back to the same handful of foundation dogs. That includes the Czech dogs, GSL, GWL. ASL and so forth. They all sprang from the same foundation dogs.Personally I find it interesting from an academc standpoint only. I have seen too many dogs of other breeds backmassed on specific breed dogs that I've seen in person. They rarely exhibited many common traits and didn't produce similar progeny either.

This is nice article that gives a rather oversimplifed look at COI's but I like simple articles about complicated subjects LOL.

BTW this article contains a link to a download of the soft ware Hundmutter recommended. I didn't try to download it, so don't know if it works or not.

The term backmassing has been used in the US for many years, too, Hundmutter. It is still commonly used by AKC breeders.

darylehret as in http://www.ehretgsd.com/?

If so I like the links page. Lots of good reading there. The temperment one is one of my favorites.

If somebody who wanted to learn asked I might be tempted, but to explain to one who has all the answers is a waste of my time....anyway it's time to leave this thread.

Gustav, have you ever computed the COI on a GSD? If so what were the results?

by bcrawford on 03 December 2012 - 23:12

I'm not Gustav but everytime I've done it on my handy dandy excell sheet its 0% individually. Never knew why. Maybe I check the wrong dogs or put in the wrong data?

I also have a column called Genetic Covariance and that shows some interesting numbers on certain dogs.

No kidding, I'd have thought it wouldn't be possible to get a 0 with a GSD. I guess I need to go back to the drawing board and do some more studying. I think I'll download the software and try my dog. She's distantly linebred.Have you treid to generate a COI pedigree? The program most I know use produces pedigrees that make my teeth ache when I'm trying to read them. Generation after generation one under the other. Ugh!

by bcrawford on 04 December 2012 - 00:12

I will get a number on the for the over all "name" of the pedigree but each individual dog always shows 0. Could be problem with the sheet though. I guess?
