Bob,
Watch for an AKC all breeds show in your area. Often times they will have the nearest herding organization put on a herding instinct test that you can sign up for on the spot. They usually charge about 50.00 per test and if they have two different judges to test under you can receive a HIC for your dogs. It's fun, especially if your dog takes to it like Echo did. You will be amazed! They will put a long line on your dog and take it into a round pen with a few sheep or goats and let the dog do it's thing. They will keep the dog from harming the livestock if yours are a little too much into prey drive. They usually ask the owner to stay out of the pen while they assess the dog. They don't expect the dog to actually herd the livestock but judge them by their interest and how they react. Some dogs tried to climb out of the pen to get to "momma" . How embarrassing! LOL I only saw two dogs try to harm the sheep. One was an out of control working line...way too much prey drive. They had to take her away. Another was some weird French sheep dog that I can't remember the name but think of the movie "For the Love of Wynn Dixie" That dog actually grabbed a goat and held on until the judge managed to shake him loose. That was exciting. Some dogs didn't even look at the sheep, others were afraid. It's very interesting to watch other dogs and compare notes. Go for it, Bob.
