kyle .. you are correct .. a very very nice statsitic to share !!! the only difficulty .. especially newcomers .. by the time they take note of a behavior  .. neve mind respond .. that is far beyond 1.5 seconds. !! same when we drive our vehicles .. the response time is beyond 1 second .. so you can calculate how far at 50MPH a car can travel by the time you figure you need to stop and then actually stop .. you will go a long distance.. how different then 1 sec. makes when we train our dogs. !! same with martial arts .. the average person , not one trained in the arts .. by the time they realize a punch is on the way .. they are already on the ground.. SO .. i try to remember .. to always be kind to my GSD and to make sure i am correct in what i do first !!

Alphpup, LOL, ah the fond memories of my security K9 coming back at me during grip work.  Good thing I am taller than he is on his hind leggs.  Only took him about 4 seconds to rethink things. Then he platz'ed when I told him.  We both took a 5 minute time out so we both could come out of drive.  Aahh the good old days.

"See that confuses me because I think of positive/negative and reinforcement/punishment as defined by operant conditions."

look.. I adjust the training to a dog, then when I find the tune I keep consistency. "that is if I am not screwing something up like my position, me being the confusing element to a dog.
My male I can't punish him enough when he is in a drive. It is like petting him! I created that!
My female she needs a little correction but nothing huge. When I teach them anything new, I use common sence. In ob it is positive reinforcement /negative punishment  Giva\e or take away! in Protection..well then I use negative reinforcement also! It all depends!

positive reinforcer can be praise tug
Negative punishment is no toy!

Let's see if I got it right..if not shame on me! LOL

Kyle... ---- contemplate this .. if you will : your comment... " negative reinforcement is for stopping unwanted behavior and distraction proofing " what if you use the distraction as the cue / stimulus [ a way to be positive]  in order to get the reward ???... yes, oh yes !!! ...i do the opposite of your comment !! works like this : .. instead of using a negative to deal with a distraction .. i use a distraction to get the behavior i want >>> you think i am using semantics here ?? not by any means !!!.. i start with a pup ... in order to teach the dog to  be attentive to me i will purposely place the dog in all and every distraction i can [ same theory for teaching the bite work ].. simply .. when the dog looks at another dog, a distraction ,  , i leave the pup  be .. BUT when the pup  turns it's eyes from the distraction on to my eyes  then and only then ,  it gets what it needs , a bite , a toy , dinner, to chase a ball , what the dog seeks/ needs. So , tell me what the dog learns .. over time and repititions -it learns  not to concearn itself with distractions . and if by mistake it does concearn itself with a distraction ,  ,, the distraction leads something better involving me. .../ / which will the dog ultimately over time consistently choose?  .. it's interest lying with me?  , or the distraction ?? the result .. i don't need a NEGATIVE to overcome a distraction !! me, myself  and offering the needs to a pup is the postive that allows the dog to pay heed to overcome distractions . So a POSITIVE is what i use to defeat what may  be considered a distraction .  i have me and what the dog needs.  !! AND i hope that is a  Positive.  PS .. same with my protection work . starts with tug/rag work . i put evry distraction under the sun in the routine.. only one , one things ultmately becomes the matter to the dog ... THE BITE ..
