Past being prologue, I would expect that the SV will continue to run LC's separate from the stock-coats and, if LC entries outnumber stock coats, will create something similar to the "Universal Sieger" title to satisfy all egos involved and keep the revenue stream going.
IMPO, LC's should be shown alongside stock coats and let the better dog win.

"I have seen many long coated dogs who belonged in the gene pool for their correct temperament, health, and structure. I believe that this is, in fact, a good move, although if we really cared about the breed we might not make it so the dogs were in a separate breed book. There is a lot to be said for excluding such dogs from the gene pool simply because of coat length. "
Aye Aye!! Totally agree!

I'd like to see ALL the "allowed & permissible" coats & colors in the same trials, shows & breed surveys......I do not believe that it will be in this breeds best interest to "separate" them....
If coat types & colors are being "accepted"...then let them be "accepted" completely.
again...JMO.

The Altdeutsche breeders register their dogs with the Rasse und Gebrauchshund Verein Bayern e.V.
you will find they are also members of the German Dog sport union www.dhsu.de/Home/home.html
and the SV for tests, they already use longcoats from standards coats for breeding such as Endrefalva Jango who is by Quenn vom Löher Weg out of Veona van Noort
There must be members on here that can probably explain it better than me such as the owner of this dog
www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/579775.html
although I prefer their other male Basko but no link on here to him

It seems sad with so many people all claiming to love the "german shepherd dog" as described by the standard that this breed has been torn into so many "sub types" by these same folks.
I suspect the German shepherd may win the award (ahead of pit bulls and dobermans) for "The Most Different Types" of dog within the same breed. Of course some of these "types" are caused by the ignorant BYB, like "Silverbacks" and "King", but now you have longcoat v shortcoat v plush; you have red/black v everything else, you have banana back v correct back, American v. German, etc, etc, etc.
It's tough for a breed can withstand all the division and flourish.

I have to wonder if in the near future the SV etc. will just allow LC (with under coats) to compete in the same ring with SC. It's going to put an undue burden on those having shows. I was recently asked if I wanted to enter my LC in a conformation show, I said no, don't really have any interest in it. Then I got to thinking it may be kinda cool to give it a try. But I would very likely end up being the only LC in the show! So what fun would that be. I don't really see how they are going to make it work, with having two rings.

1) No!! The coats will be kept separate. Will not be shown in the same class as the regular stock coats. The breed book will also be separate and they will only be bred with coats. Coat plus coat= 100% coated puppies! The coated puppies born from regular stockcoated parents will of course, also be shown and recorded in the variety "long stockcoat" class/breed book.
2) The SV had a short press release on its webpage a few months ago, excusing the waiting time on the "long stockcoat" issue due to the FCI taking longer than anticipated to discuss the breed standard change. Until then, everything is speculation and there is plenty of it out there.
3) Wildmoor, there are lots of kennel clubs and organizations in Germany. We Germans are known for our hobbies and organizing everything. There is a standing joke that as soon as there are a handfull of Germans sharing a common interest, they form a club! The reason is that we are such sociable people, lol. But seriously, none of these organizations are FCI recognized. So, they don't matter anywhere and neither do their registration papers. You can compare that with the numerous state kennel clubs here in the U.S.! The only interesting thing will be if the two more organized clubs who so far, have promoted the long stockcoat in Germany will either cease to exist or will be striving for FCI recognition once the standard is changed and will be competing with the SV, just like the RSV-2000 now does as a probationary VDH-member.
4) NoCurs: Why is it sad to have long stockcoats reintegrated as a variety? It amazes me how emotional and defensive people get (not only you) about this issue. The coats will not take anything away from the regular stockcoated dogs. They have always been fancied and I can understand why. As to color preferences, why not? As long as the breed standard accepts a specific color variation I see no problems. On a personal note: It has always bothered me that blacks and sables are not shown more and that the "black and reds" dominate the scene. This, among other things unduly limits our genepool. I won't comment on Shiloh and King Shepherds as they are not German Shepherds and should not even be discussed on our GSD related board.

Chris,
Can you elaborate on what some of the discussion is about the change in standard with the FCI? Or do you have a web site where I can go read it?
I agree that more blacks and sables who are proper conformation should be shown. But then, there are often too many excuses from the hard core working line enthusiasts as to why not. Whenever we had such dogs shown in the shows my club sponsored, they often did very well IF groomed and presented properly. And in a local show, that is not all that difficult to do with a bit of help from someone who knows how to show the dog.
Thank you.

Hi Hodie,
the SV just issued a short statement about that on its webpage under the table of contents for regulations: www.schaeferhund.de/site/index.php . It is tough to find if you are actively looking for it. This statement is part of the new "Koerordnung" (breed survey regulations) because the SV already changed all its regulations concerning the long stockcoat with undercoat last year - see paragraph 4.1.4. in the "Zuchtordnung" (breeding regulations) for example. Here is the German wording of the statement (copied from the SV webpage):
Hinweis:
It basically states that due to the FCI commission for breed standards discussing this issue in their next meeting in April 2010 and if permission is granted, it will be put to a decision to the FCI board of directors, its change can not be implemented as planned on January 01, 2010 and will be ratified later (pending FCI approval, of course).
