I'm not sure what the people do your buying from as far as bedding in the crate when they ship their pups. Our pup spent 13 hours in the crate before we got her (cancelled flight because they couldn't find a pilot for the plane). The people we bought her from put about 2 inches of shredded newspaper and wood chips in the bottom of the crate. She was both clean and dry when we picked her up. The breeder sent both food and water (taped to the top of the crate, we also brought our own water) with her. After we got her out of the kennel she took a quick pee, drank a little water then wanted to play for a few minutes. On the hour long ride home she layed down on my wifes lap and went to sleep. That was the only sleep that was got by any of us the first night LMAO!!!

Good luck with your new pup!!

Both times I imported pups from Kirschental I think the crates were lined with newspaper.  Pups were dry upon arrival but still needed a quick hosing off.  Left them in the crate for the hour-long drive, got back home around 4:00 pm so still had some daylight to play and introduce to resident dogs.

Definitely not much sleep the first night, though, especially with my little female - she was PISSED about being back in the crate, and very vocal about it too!  No more puppy house like back in Germany, so a big adjustment for her, I'm sure.  I think she squawked for like a week, until she learned that she'd get some nice bribes to go in there.

Thanks for the very specific info. The customs documents are mailed to me or do they arrive on the flight?

The import documents will arrive with the pup.  I think there's a $25 document fee that you need to pay to the shipper.    You then take the documents over to South Boston to the Customs office at the Black Falcon terminal to get them stamped, then drive back with the stamped documents to the shipping terminal at Logan to (finally) pick up your pup.

Both time I had the pups shipped on Lufthansa Flight 422 that arrives in the afternoon - I think that's the only direct flight from Frankfurt to Boston, and it's the only one that arrives in time to get to Customs before they close.  You'll end up getting stuck in rush hour traffic, but there's no getting around that, unfortunately.

Thanks, I have a friend who works for US Air and lives in Southie, I'll ask him to handle the customs part for me.  Will I be allowed to open the crate without getting the documents first?

You won't even be allowed behind the desk into the warehouse until you have the Customs stamp.  They will hand you the documents for Customs and send you on your merry way across the harbor.

If that airport is anything like ours, I'd say a definite NO.  Our drive to customs take approx. 1 hour.  A real pain in the patooie.

I don't think it is that far at Logan, but with Boston traffic?

by Donald Deluxe on 18 March 2011 - 20:03

Not a ton of traffic in the Ted Williams Tunnel during the day, you should be OK going from the cargo terminal over to South Boston and back again, probably no more than 15 minutes each way.

Depending on where you live, the rush hour drive home after you've collected your pup may of course be much much worse - but you probably already know that!

Jacko

You will get a PDF of the papers for shipment.  You have to call and let the airline know you will be there and get the dog.  Then it will ship.  So be prepared to "pick up the slack" or watch your email closely.  It's your christmas not theirs.

Jacko made it to the west coast and rode home on our laps and enjoyed his first american hamburger.  We just used a couple of those pet wash cloths.

He went to the vet today, not taking him on vacation so he had to get his kennel cough shot.  The BEAST is up to 91 lbs and will be 10 months old April 6th.  I was told he sucked up well, getting tons of treats, he was too helpfull even with his nails getting a trimed.

The folks shipping the dog do it all the time, it is only new to you.  It should go smooth.
