Hi Michele,
Here's a link about checking eyes out..
http://www.animaleyecare.net/diseases/diseases.htm
I check my GSD's and Lab's, there's so much that can go wrong with eyes and an annual check-up or even every other
year having a routine eye examine can catch a problem before it leads to something big.
I took 4 dogs a few days ago a lab and 3 gsd's for an eye examine, everyone looked good, and the gsd's didn't even growl at the Dr. that was nice!
My own eye Dr. said he had an older patient that had a tumor in his eye that could only be detected with an examine, he had wished the man came in sooner for the check-up, he could have saved the eye.
Same with any test, you need to examine the individual in person to make a better diagnosis.
The test they do for DM can read the same for a dog with symptons of DM or a dog that is a carrier, they still need to evaluate the dog in person, some may be a carrier and never show symptons of the disease, some may show symptons of DM and not have the disease.
Hope that I don't sound too confusing....
